STATESBORO, Ga. — Georgia Southern hit 11 of its 20 field goals from three-land and Davidson shot just 27.7 percent in dropping a 55-42 decision on the road to the Eagles in Southern Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Hanner Fieldhouse.
Davidson, in the midst of playing four games in an eight-day span, fell to 1-4 in league play and 5-8 overall, while GSU improved to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in the SoCon.
Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) had a game-high 16 points to go along with eight boards in pacing Davidson. The sophomore went 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and scored 11 of 16 in the second half.
Joining Aleksandravicius in double figures was Kristen Johnsen (Wayne, Pa.) with 10 points and seven boards.
Georgia Southern put three in the books in double figures with MiMi DuBose getting 12 points, all on three-pointers. Jamie Navarro and Meredyth Frye followed with 11 and 10 points each. The trio of Eagles combined to go 9-for-15 from behind the arc and GSU as a team was 11-of-19 overall.
The Eagles, who were held scoreless in the final 6:20 of the first half, used the three-ball to open up a 37-26 lead at the start of the second half as they drained four treys in a six-minute stretch that turned a one-point halftime lead (23-22) into an 11-point advantage with 13:44 on the clock.
Davidson was not able to get the deficit to under 10 points the rest of the way in dropping its fifth contest in the last six.
Both teams came out firing in the early stages of the first half, but they both ended on cold streaks with neither team scoring a basket in the final six minutes. In the early going, Davidson and Georgia Southern combined for six three-balls. Three of those treys came from the Eagles' MiMi DuBose, but seven points from Laura Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) and five straight during one stretch from Aleksandravicius had the 'Cats to within one at 17-16.
Murray scored all seven of her points in the first half. The freshman dished out five of the Wildcats' 10 assists on the afternoon.
Johnsen would give the Wildcats a 22-19 lead on her seventh and eighth points of the half, but her last two-point bucket with 8:40 left in the half was all Davidson could muster the remainder of the period.
After GSU regained the lead at 23-22 on a couple of free throws, the Wildcat defense stepped up and held the Eagles scoreless for the last 6:20 of the period.
The Wildcats were perfect from the line, hitting 13-of-13, a season-best. They also pocketed a game-high 14 steals with six different players picking up two steals each.
Davidson wraps up its three-game swing and recent run of games with a 7 p.m. contest at Furman on Monday, Jan. 10.
GAME NOTES: Aleksandravicius had her 10th double-digit scoring game of the season and 25th of her career ... it's also the eighth time of the season the sophomore, 4th in the SoCon in scoring, has paced the team in scoring ... Murray has had three games this year with five assists ... the Wildcats were able to only dress eight players due to some key injuries ... Davidson and Georgia Southern are now knotted at 19-all in the all-time series, but the Wildcats have won 13 of the last 15 contests.
