NEW YORK – Davidson senior midfielder Alex Caskey will have the chance to impress Major League Soccer executives and coaches this weekend as he was invited to the 2011 adidas MLS Player Combine set for Jan. 7-11 at Central Broward Regional Park in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., the league announced Tuesday.
Caskey will be among 70 prospects split into four different teams for the event and will play on the Jabulani team. Caskey is the lone representative of the Southern Conference and was one of seven college seniors and five non-college players added to the initial invitation list. In addition to featuring the nation's top college seniors, the Combine includes underclassmen that have signed contracts through the Generation adidas program, as well as a group of international prospects that includes John Rooney, the brother of English superstar Wayne Rooney.
“We are thrilled that Alex has been invited by the nation's top league to compete along with the major prospects for Major League Soccer contracts,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear, who was one of the head coaches at last year's MLS Combine. “It's a wonderful measuring stick for Alex. For a guy with the ability and ambition to play professionally, this is the premier and pivotal showcase event.
“This is also a wonderful honor shared with the teammates and various coaching staff members that have played with and mentored Alex these four years at Davidson. I believe that it will further motivate our current players, be a point of pride for our soccer alumni, and help attract future blue-chip recruits.”
A native of Dunwoody, Ga., Caskey is looking to improve his stock for the MLS SuperDraft, which will take place in Baltimore on Thursday, Jan. 13. The first round will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and the remaining two rounds will be carried by MLSsoccer.com. The MLS will also hold a three-round Supplemental Draft via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
Caskey, a two-year team captain who played in and started all 76 Davidson matches the past four years, led the Wildcats in scoring this season with a career-best 18 points on seven goals and four assists and was named to the Southern Conference All-Conference first team for the third-consecutive season by the league's coaches. He also earned NSCAA All-South Region second team honors for the second consecutive year and was named to the 2010 Southern Conference All-Tournament team. Four of his seven goals were game-winners, including the decisive goal in the 'Cats win over eventual NCAA Tournament at-large selection College of Charleston in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament. During the regular season, he scored the Wildcats' lone goal in 1-0 wins over Campbell, Gardner-Webb (OT) and Virginia Tech. Caskey also tallied an assist in Davidson's draw with No. 13 UC Santa Barbara and a goal against No. 10 Duke.
