PINEHURST, N.C. – Jackson Taylor did not use his holiday vacation to take a break from golf as the Davidson junior won the third-annual Carolinas Young Amateur on the second playoff hole Wednesday at Pinewild Country Club.
Taylor fired a five-under-par 67 to take a two-stroke lead after the first round Tuesday, but finished the second-and-final round with a one-over 73 to fall into to a tie with Jack Fields at 140. Taylor, a Wilmington, N.C. native, prevailed though on the second playoff hole to claim the championship.
“I did not get off to a good start, but I played well on the back side and made a 20-footer on the last hole to get into the playoff,” commented Taylor.
The tournament was open 18-24 year olds who have finished high school and are legal residents of North or South Carolina. It was played on the par-72, 7,043-yard Pinewild course.
Taylor was not the only Wildcat to use his holiday vacation as an opportunity to get more golf in. Freshman Samuel Echikson competed in the 80th Annual Dixie Amateur Championship Dec. 17-21 at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla and finished with a three-under par 213.
Davidson will begin the fall golf season Feb. 21-22 at the Wexford Invitational in Florence, S.C.
