Wildcats Split Decisions Against Gardner-Webb in Regular-Season Finale

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — The Wildcat women won seven individual titles — including three by senior Lindsey Martin, and a pair of relays to defeat Gardner-Webb, 147-115, in the team's final regular season dual-meet competition.
But despite three wins by each junior Geoffrey Peitz and sophomore Drew Onken and a pair of titles for junior Curtis Chaney, the Wildcat men suffered a 124-138 loss in Boiling Springs Saturday afternoon in the team's final competition before the 2011 CCSA Championships.
The Wildcat women kicked off the competition with a win in the 400 medley relay, as sophomore Kelsi Hobbs, senior Ineke Stegger, senior Emily Castle and senior Lindsey Martin combined for a winning time of 3:56.56.
Martin continued her winning ways, taking her first of three individual titles behind a time of 1:56.02 in the 200 free, and Chaney made it a sweep for the Wildcats with a first-place time of 1:43.39 on the men's side.
Peitz followed with his first title of the day behind a time of 50.73 in the 100 back, and Onken did the same with a winning time of 58.09 in the 100 breast.
Martin won a second event with a time of 23.59 in the 50 free, followed by teammates Castle (24.07) and sophomore Jean DeOrnellas (25.37). The 'Cats took the top two spots in the men's heat as well, as senior Bryan Droll (21.57) just outtouched sophomore Wills Cooper (21.58).
Martin won her third individual title with a winning time of 51.67 in the 100 free, followed by DeOrnellas (54.89). Senior Anna Stringfield finished first in the 200 back with a time of 2:08.55, and Peitz picked up a second title for the sweep with a time of 1:53.55 in the men's event.
Onken won the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.70, and senior Jessica Delgehausen (5:07.98) and Chaney (4:47.21) swept the 500 free.
Castle (56.99), sophomore Liz Mace, and Hobbs went one-two-three in the 100 fly, and Peitz won his final event with a first-place time of 50.43 on the men's side.
Junior Lauren Kamperman won the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.53, and Onken finished first on the men's side with a time of 1:53.72 for his third win of the day.
The Wildcat women's relay of DeOrnellas, Delgehausen, Castle and Stringfield completed the winning for the 'Cats with a first-place time of 3:35.84 in the 400 free relay.
Today's dual meet concludes regular-season competition for the Wildcats, who now turn their attention to the 2011 CCSA Championships, opening February 18 in Athens, Ga.
