FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Alex Caskey scored in the third minute to lead Jabulani over AdiPower on the final day of competition at the 2011 adidas MLS Player Combine at Central Broward Regional Park Tuesday morning.
Caskey played in his usual center midfield slot in all three games, starting Saturday and Tuesday's matches and playing the entire first half. He played the entire second half in Jabulani's Monday match.
“Alex did very well, and made a solid case that he can definitely compete against the other top college seniors and pro prospects in the U.S.,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear.
Caskey generated scoring opportunities in each game. He took a pair of corner kicks in the opening match and nearly scored with a header off a free kick in the second match. He broke through early in the final game, curling a shot from outside the box into the left, bottom corner of the net.
“It was clear watching the online broadcasts and in speaking to his team's coach that he had confidence and that he connected well with the group,” added Spear. “When you play in an all-star setting, it can be more of a showcase for each individual rather than a team effort. Alex has told me that he really enjoyed the experience, and that's the most important thing.”
Jabulani finished with the top record at 2-1-0, defeating AdiZero, 2-1 on Saturday and falling to AdiPure, 2-0 on Monday before finishing with the win over AdiPower. AdiPure went undefeated at 1-0-2, while AdiZero went 1-1-1 and AdiPower went 0-2-1. Caskey was among 70 prospects split into four different teams for the event
Caskey and the rest of the MLS hopefuls will now look forward to the three-round MLS SuperDraft, which will take place in Baltimore on Thursday, Jan. 13. The first round will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and the remaining two rounds will be carried by MLSsoccer.com.
Players not selected in the SuperDraft will then look forward to the Supplemental Draft, which will be held via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 18. It will feature three additional rounds.
“There is nothing we can control at this point, other than sit back, wait, and believe that he performed well at the Combine,” said Spear. “It is certainly a big step up to the MLS, but we hope that he will get a shot in a preseason training camp to show what he can do with and against the pros.”
