Box Score
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior middle blocker Jorden Benedict posted 10 kills and three blocks as the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team got back on the winning track with a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-19) sweep over N.C. A&T Thursday night at the Ellis F. Corbett Sports Center.
Benedict finished with 10 kills on just 16 attacks and was the only hitter in the match to finish in double figures. Senior setter Hayley Lawson tallied 27 assists, while classmate Jennifer Chamblee led the defense with 10 digs, as Davidson evened its overall record to 7-7.
Mia Gray had team-leading seven kills and eight digs for N.C. A&T (1-13), and Tatiana Cooper totaled six kills. Amber Inman finished with 17 assists, and Jeana Daniels had three blocks.
With N.C. A&T opening a 7-4 lead to start the match, the Wildcats battled back to knot the score at eight behind a 4-1 run that included kills from junior opposite Erin Lupfer and junior outside hitter Christine Perzinski. Behind strong serving from Chamblee, the 'Cats rattled off eight straight points to open a 16-10 lead and held off a late rally from the Aggies for the 25-22 win. Trailing 22-15, N.C. A&T pulled within two, 24-22, behind a 7-2 run, but Benedict delivered the first set to the 'Cats.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 12-6 lead behind four aces - two for senior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele and one each for Lawson and Perzinski - and three kills from Lupfer. But Davidson's lead evaporated, as the Aggies went on a 9-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. The Wildcats battled back to knot the score at 22 behind four kills from freshman middle blocker Tindall Sewell, but N.C. A&T won the next point on a kill from Cooper. Back-to-back Aggie errors gave Davidson a set point, 24-23, but a service error knotted the score once more. Inman's service error followed by a hitting error on A&T gave Davidson the 26-24 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final game, the Wildcats took a 9-5 lead and never trailed en route to the 25-19 win for the match. The Aggies cut the lead to one, 11-10, by winning three straight scores, but Davidson halted the rally by winning the next two, and A&T could not get closer. Leading 21-19, the 'Cats closed out the match with a 4-0 run as Perzinski aced the match winner.
Davidson will continue its four-match road swing with a pair of matches on Saturday as the Wildcats travel to Norfolk, Va., to face Norfolk State (11 a.m.) and Delaware State (3 p.m.).
