
Volleyball Concludes Tournament Play, Hosts Nfinity Wildcat Classic

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team concludes its regular-season tournament schedule by hosting Boise State, Eastern Michigan and High Point at the 2010 Nfinity Wildcat Classic Friday and Saturday at Belk Arena.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
High Point and Boise State kick off the tournament at 4:30 p.m. Friday, followed by Davidson and Eastern Michigan in the nightcap at 7 p.m. It's a quick turnaround for Eastern Michigan, who returns for the 10 a.m. match against Boise State Saturday, followed by Davidson and High Point at 12:30 p.m. The Panthers come right back with a 4:30 p.m. match-up against Eastern Michigan in their finale, before the Wildcats take on Boise State in the tournament finale Saturday at 7 p.m.
TEAM CAPSULES
Boise State Broncos: Boise State (9-2) is coming off a 5-0 week with wins over Utah Valley, Weber State, Portland, UT-Arlington and Wyoming. All were sweeps, except the Bronco's 3-1 win over Weber State, as Boise State won the Uni/Wyo Cowgirl Classic title. Alisha Young, Kersti Whitney and Liz Harden were named to the all-tournament team, while Young also picked up the tournament MVP honor. The Broncos are sporting their best record since 2004, already totaling more than the team's 2009 season total (8). Young leads the team in kills (143) and service aces (12), while Breann Nesselhuf leads in assists (433). Amanda Remy has a team-high 129 digs, while Sadie Maughan leads in blocks (43). In his second season at Boise State, head coach Shawn Garus was formerly at SoCon-foe UNCG.
Davidson Wildcats: Davidson (6-4) opened its home season with a 3-0 win over N.C. Central Tuesday night, with senior Sarabeth Peele and junior Erin Lupfer recording nine kills apiece. The Wildcats also got five kills from freshman Tindall Sewell, on just six attacks, and four kills, seven digs and five aces from classmate Caroline Brown. Davidson went 2-1 at both the James Madison Tournament — with wins over UNC Asheville (3-0) and Stetson (3-0), and the Radford University Tournament — with wins over Canisius (3-0) and Radford (3-0). The 'Cats went 1-2 at the UTSA Classic with a 3-0 win over UT-PA. Davidson also has losses against James Madison (0-3), ETSU (2-3), UTEP (0-3) and UTSA (0-3).
Eastern Michigan Eagles: Eastern Michigan (10-1) is off to a hot start to the 2010 season, winning 31 of its 37 sets, and their best start since 2003. For the third-straight weekend, EMU won a tournament title, as the Eagles claimed the Spartan Invitational title with a 3-2 win over Michigan State. Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello was named the tournament MVP with juniors Ashley Mason and Haley Stein garnering All-Tournament accolades. Eastern Michigan also won the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa., Sept. 3-4., and the 35th Annual Comfort Suites Invitational, Aug. 27-28, at Sam Houston State University. Iaquaniello and Stein are the current Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
High Point Panthers: High Point (3-8) snapped an eight-game losing streak Tuesday with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-16) win over Campbell (2-10) at the Millis Center. Freshman Maddie Simpson had a career-high 54 assists, adding 10 digs, three kills and two blocks. Sophomore Molly Barlow came off the bench to contribute 14 digs, and Megan Smith and Audie Gonzalez both posted double-doubles. The Panthers also have wins over UNC Wilmington (3-1) and N.C. A&T (3-0) against losses to Appalachian State (2-3), Cleveland State (1-3), Marshall (2-3), Hofstra (2-3), Arizona State (2-3), UC Riverside (0-3) and Utah Valley State (1-3). Last season Davidson beat High Point 3-0 (26-28, 23-25, 28-30).

After four straight matches at Belk Arena, the Wildcats will hit the road for four, starting at N.C. A&T Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. Davidson travels to Norfolk, Va., to play Norfolk State Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. and Delaware State at 3 p.m., before opening SoCon play at Wofford Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
