Volleyball Opens Home Season, Hosts N.C. Central Tuesday

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team will open its home season Tuesday at Belk Arena, hosting the N.C. Central Eagles at 7 p.m. And after three weekends of tournament play on the road, the Wildcats will host their own Nfinity Wildcat Classic this weekend, as Boise State, Eastern Michigan and High Point visit Baker Sports Complex.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
The Wildcats lead the all-time series 1-0, winning the team's only meeting 3-0 on Sept. 15, 1990.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
Davidson (5-4) went 2-1 at both the James Madison Tournament and the Radford University Tournament and is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio. The Wildcats swept UT-Pan American in the team's second match of the weekend, sandwiched between 0-3 losses to both UTEP and UT-San Antonio. Davidson swept UNC Asheville and Stetson opening weekend before falling 0-3 to host James Madison, and recorded 3-0 wins over both Canisius and Radford the following weekend, dropping a five-setter in between to East Tennessee State.
The Wildcats are sporting a balanced attack this season with senior Sarabeth Peele (2.76 kills/set), junior Christine Perzinski (2.28/s) and senior Jorden Benedict (2.00/set) all with at least two kills a set, and freshman Caroline Brown (1.95/s), junior Erin Lupfer (1.79/s) and junior Madison Benedict (1.62/s) right behind. Hayley Lawson has 176 assists (6.29/s) and is tied with Perzinski for a team-best 13 aces. Defensively, Jorden Benedict leads the team with 22 blocks (0.76/s), while senior Jennifer Chamblee has a team-high 82 digs (3.04/s).
ABOUT THE EAGLES
N.C. Central (1-8) picked up its lone win over Delaware State (3-1) Aug. 28, but have been swept by Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, UTEP, Elon, Delaware State, UNCG, Minnesota, Duke and Delaware.
Belind Behncke-Biney paces the Eagle offense with 78 kills, averaging 2.79 per set, and a team-leading eight aces. Sashalee Wallen (1.12/s), who leads the team with 21 blocks, Shantel Moore (1.33/s) and Maritsann Sinclair (1.25/s) also contribute. Setter Jzima-Malaki Kalao has 171 assists, averaging 6.11 per set, and Raven King paces the defense with 76 digs (2.92/s).
NEXT UP
The Wildcats will conclude their tournament play when they host Boise State, Eastern Michigan and High Point at the 2010 Nfinity Wildcat Classic Friday and Saturday. After matches against N.C. A&T (Sept. 23), Norfolk State (Sept. 25) and Delaware State (Sept. 26), Davidson opens SoCon play at Wofford Sept. 28.
