DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team was picked to finish fourth in the South divison in the Southern Conference Preaseason Poll, while senior team captain Sarabeth Peele was named to the All-SoCon Preseason Team, as selected by the league's head coaches and released today by the league office.
Peele, who led the conference with 496 kills (4.07/set) and enters the season ranked eighth in Davidson history with 1,217 career kills, will once again lead the Wildcat attack. It is the first All-SoCon selection for Peele, who has previously been named SoCon Player of the Week (2007) and SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week (2009).
“Sarabeth has been one of the top players in the conference for the past three years,” head coach Tim Cowie said. “It's well deserved recognition of her career at Davidson and overall play in the conference.”
For a second straight season, Samford and College of Charleston were selected to win the North and South Divisions. Samford, who gathered nine first-place votes and 65 points overall, lost in last season's tournament semifinals to the eventual champion College of Charleston and will seek their third straight division title. The Bulldogs return all but one member from last year's roster, including senior preseason all-conference selection Hillary Fountain. With seven first-place votes and a total of 62 points, the 2009 SoCon champions College of Charleston were picked to win the South Division and led the league with three all-conference selections.
Elon was picked to finished second in the North, collecting 52 points and one first-place vote. Appalachian State earned the final two first-place votes (50 total points), followed by UNCG (35), Chattanooga (27) and Western Carolina (17).
Furman, who received four first-place votes and 58 total points, was picked to finished second in the South with 58 total points. The Paladins return nine players, including a pair of preseason All-Conference selections from last year's team that swept through the Southern Conference regular season with a 16-0 perfect conference record. Georgia Southern (48 points), who claimed the other first-place vote, was picked third, followed by Davidson, Wofford (24) and The Citadel (18).
Davidson will open its 2010 season at the James Madison Tournament this weekend as the 'Cats take on UNC Asheville at 5 p.m. Friday. Davidson will wrap up its first weekend of tournament play with Stetson at 10 a.m. and the host Dukes in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. After trips to the Radford University Tournament and the UTSA Classic, the Wildcats will make their 2010 home debut against Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 as part of their annual Wildcat Classic.
Notes: Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team or players in the preseason poll and all-conference selections. The preseason all-conference team is an eight-member team, but due to a tie in the balloting, nine members were selected.
