DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson junior linebacker John Behm has been announced by Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) as one of 112 student-athletes under consideration for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
The award honors the distinguished group of college football players who stand out for the positive influence they have in their communities, and Behm is one of four student-athletes from the Pioneer Football League being considered for the honor.
A Davidson Bonner Scholar, Behm tutors first and second graders at Davidson Elementary School, participates in the Davidson Housing Coalition, helping to repair homes for the needy, and is active in Adopt a Grand-Friend, which partners senior citizens in the area with Davidson students.
During Spring Break last year, he volunteered at various community service sites, including orphanages, food banks and soup kitchens, in Atlanta. He also participated in the Big Brother Program and helped fundraise for the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson.
The two-time PFL Academic Honor Roll selection has played in all 21 games during his Davidson career and recorded 83 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, five pass breakups and three fumble recoveries for the Wildcats.
From the nominees submitted, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will select two 11-player Good Works Teams – one comprised of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another with players representing the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA.
The list will be trimmed to 22 award recipients in mid-September. Those honorees will be featured on an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team web site launched by ESPN.com.
