DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson football coach Tripp Merritt announced today that 28 student-athletes, making up the class of 2014, have committed to play football for the Wildcats, beginning in the 2010 season. The Davidson football team will report to preseason camp Aug. 9.
“We are really excited about this incoming class of student-athletes, and we think that for the most part, we filled many of our positional needs,” said Merritt. “Hats off to our coaching staff and our admissions liasion, Steve Gentile, for putting together another good class of top-notch student-athletes, who excel in the classroom and can compete at the quality level of the Pioneer Football League. With the 28 newcomers, our total roster should be slightly over 100 for a second straight year, which is really a testament to their hard work.”
The Wildcats continued to draw from around the country as 12 different states are represented in the class, including nine players from North Carolina and South Carolina and five from Ohio. Fifteen players are on the offensive side of the ball, 12 play defense and one is a kicker/punter.
Merritt has also announced the captains for next season, who are linebacker Daniel Astrop, receiver Mark Hanabury, defensive back Matt Guerrieri, running back Kenny Mantuo and punter Andrew Wohler. The captains, all of whom are seniors, were selected in a vote by the student-athletes and coaching staff.
The Wildcats return 15 starters and 45 lettermen from the 2009 team, and Davidson opens the 2010 campaign Sept. 4, at home against Georgetown.
