KANNAPOLIS, NC – Former Davidson Wildcat standout Zach Kayne '09 has been added to the roster of the Kannapolis Intimidators, the Single-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and will make his debut at shortstop Saturday night against the Lakewood BlueClaws. First pitch is schedule for 7:05 p.m.
Kayne was drafted by the White Sox in 2009 in the 22nd round and reported to Great Falls, Montana for his professional debut. While at Great Falls, he batted .266 in 54 games in the Advanced Rookie Pioneer League.
Kayne led the Wildcats with a .340 batting average as a senior, when he became the school's all-time single-season doubles record holder with 22. The Roswell, Ga. native and 2008 Team MVP ended his Davidson career with 198 hits, 118 runs, and a career .323 batting average, ranking sixth on the school's all-time career doubles list and tallying 48 two-base hits in his four seasons.
Kayne is the Wildcat's highest draft pick since Brian Akin was drafted in the 14th round in the 2004 draft. Before 2004, the top pick for Davidson was shortstop Robert Eenhoorn, who was taken in the second round (45th overall pick) by the New York Yankees in 1990.
In their 16th season of play as an organization, the Intimidators play at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, N.C., just 21 miles from Davidson College. The organization has produced such talents as Jimmy Rollins, Gordon Beckham and NFL star Ricky Williams.
