DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson men's and women's swimming diving teams finished the 2009-10 season ranked 23rd in the 8th Annual CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Mid-Major Rankings.
The Wildcat men won the team's first Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championship by defeating Gardner-Webb, 907-653, in Knoxville to conclude the season. Freshman Drew Onken was honored as Men's Most Outstanding Freshman Performer, the second straight season a Wildcat received the honor. Sophomore Ben Lane was named Men's Most Outstanding Diver for the second season, and head coach John Young was named Men's Coach of the Year. The Davidson men set five individual school records and a pair of relay records en route to the program's first championship.
The Davidson women finished second at the 2010 CCSA to repeat champion Florida Gulf Coast. Junior Lindsey Martin was named Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer, sweeping the freestyle events while becoming the first Davidson swimmer to qualify and compete at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships held at Purdue. The Wildcat women set seven new individual school records and three relay records as well.
The Ivy League champion Princeton women broke Harvard's four-year run to move into the top spot in the final dual-meet ranking, which compares teams relative dual-meet strengths. The Tigers rolled to a perfect 7-0 record and an 18th place finish at the NCAA Championships.
On the men's side, MAC champion Eastern Michigan posted a 6-2 record with their only losses coming to Big Ten powers Ohio State and Purdue, their first Mid-Major title in six years to knock the US Naval Academy, winner of the previous two titles, to second.
In all, forty-nine teams participated in the final rankings. Institutions eligible for the CollegeSwimming.com poll are those institutions that a) are not members of a BCS conference, Mountain West Conference, or Western Athletic Conference; or b) provide fewer than one-half of the allowable scholarships under the NCAA rules. This year's poll was coordinated by Randy Horner at the University of New Orleans.
