DAVIDSON, N.C. - Four Wildcats have been named to the Academic All-Pioneer Football League Team, the conference announced today. Peter Kidwell and Aaron Saltzman earned first-team honors on defense, while Mark Iafrate was named second-team offense, and Daniel Astrop was named second-team defense.
An All-PFL honorable mention selection, Kidwell ranked third in the league with three interceptions, and his 105 return yards on the picks led the conference. The sophomore defensive back also had 53 tackles, including 35 solo stops. He added two tackles for loss and two pass breakups and was named PFL Defensive Player of the Week Nov. 7 after returning an interception for a touchdown at San Diego. Kidwell also received ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades and holds a 3.33 grade point average.
Saltzman played in nine contests and made 20 tackles, including 2.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. The senior defensive lineman was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District by CoSIDA and has a 3.49 GPA in political science.
Iafrate, a second-team All-PFL selection, started all 10 games and anchored an offensive line that helped the Wildcats average 146.1 yards a contest on the ground. The senior center earned Honorable Mention All-PFL honors in 2008 and has a 3.30 grade point average in economics.
Astrop was named All-PFL Honorable Mention after leading the Wildcats and ranking 12th in the league in tackles (68). The junior linebacker, who owns a 3.47 GPA, had 3.5 sacks, 5.0 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles.
PFL athletic directors established the Academic All-PFL teams in 1993 as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. To earn the honor, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career.
The Wildcats finished the 2009 campaign with a 3-7 overall record and a 3-5 mark in conference play.
