DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats will look to get back to their winning ways as they host the second-place Samford Bulldogs in an Easter weekend series at Wilson Field beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
Samford (14-10, SoCon) is coming off a three-game sweep of the Furman Paladins in Alabama last weekend. The Bulldogs, who did not play a midweek game this week, are second in the league standings after taking two of three from the College of Charleston (20-13, 4-14, 18-4) in Charleston and sweeping the Paladins (3-2, 13-4, 4-1) at home.
Davidson (13-12, 4-6 SoCon), meanwhile, enters the weekend on a season-long five-game losing streak after a late-game rally fell a run short in the first of three separate conference games at UNC Greensboro Tuesday night.
Probable Starters
The teams will open the series with a 7 p.m. start Thursday night, in order to take Easter Sunday off. Junior RHP Ian Horkley (1-1, 5.26) will take the mound for the Wildcats against Samford's senior RHP Jonathan Stephens (4-0, 5.40).
In a change from the original schedule, the teams will play the second game of the series at 6 p.m. Friday, as Davidson sends sophomore RHP Ryan Overcash (4-0, 3.09) to the mound against Samford's sophomore RHP Kyle Putkonen (3-1, 7.04).
After making the start against UNC Greensboro Tuesday night, senior LHP Thomas Middour (1-1, 5.26) returns to the mound Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Bulldogs' sophomore RHP Josh Martin (1-3, 6.17).
About the Series
In one of the younger series, Samford and Davidson are knotted at two games apiece in just four meetings. The teams first played on March 4, 1999 with Samford winning the inaugural game, 10-5. Davidson won the Southern Conference series last season, 2-1.
Last Meeting
Samford won the first game of the 2009 series, 6-4, before the Wildcats swept a double-header on day two, 10-9 and 4-1.
Davidson scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, but the Bulldogs answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good in the opening game, as Middour took his second loss of the season, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The Wildcats swept the Bulldogs in double-header action Saturday afternoon, hanging on for a 10-9 win in the first game before securing the series victory with a 4-1 decision in the second. In the opening game, the Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the first to set the tone, but the Bulldogs scored four runs over the last two innings and nearly completed the comeback. Matt Webb, though, came on to earn the last two outs and his third save of the season.
Webb then started the nightcap for the 'Cats, allowing just one run and scattering five hits over 6 1/3 innings. In the nightcap, neither offense could manage a run until the sixth inning as Mason Meredeth led off with a home run. It was all the scoring that Samford would manage, though, as the Wildcats added two in both the eighth and ninth to win the series. Graham Chapman hit a two-out infield single and Kayne's seventh home run of the season proved the game-winner.
About the Bulldogs
Samford is led at the plate by David Schulze, batting .356 with seven home runs and 27 RBI to rank 15th in the SoCon in average. Bo Smith is batting .341, while Mason Meredeth is batting .337 with four home runs and 22 RBI. Wayne Miller has a .324 average with five home runs and 18 RBI.
As a team, the Bulldogs are batting .305, fourth best in the league, and have a team ERA of 5.84, good for eighth in the standings.
Samford split a four-game series with Marshall to open the season before beating Troy in a single game. The Bulldogs took two of three from Kennesaw State on the road and did the same to Evansville in Birmingham. Outside of league play, the Dogs also have single-game losses to Michigan State and Auburn and a three-game series win over Minnesota.
About the Wildcats
After starting hot, the Wildcats find themselves on a season-long five game losing streak in the middle of an 11-game Southern Conference stretch. After losing a midweek game to Duke, 6-2, Davidson was swept by Elon and dropped a rare midweek SoCon game at Greensboro Tuesday.
While the team is sixth in the league with a .296 batting average as the bats seemed to have cooled off, junior first baseman Danny Weiss continues his impressive junior campaign, now leading the league with a .419 (36-for-86) batting average. Also turning it up lately, sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire is now second on the team and 12th in the league with a .364 clip, followed immediately by freshman third baseman Andrew Barna at .356.
Junior Mike Frongello, who tied the Davidson career appearances record with his 82nd appearance at Greensboro Tuesday, ranks second in the league with a 2.72 ERA, followed immediately by sophomore RHP Ryan Overcash with a 3.09 ERA. Senior LHP Thomas Middour is third with 41 strikeouts.
Next-Up
Davidson plays the eighth of 11 straight conference games when it travels back to Greensboro for the second game of the broken-up series Wednesday April 7 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats will then hit the road for a traditional three-game SoCon series at Appalachian State April 9-11.
Samford will host Troy in a midweek, non-conference game April 6 before hosting the Spartans for three games April 9-11.
