BERKELEY, Calif. — Five straight goals by California to open the game proved to be the difference as the Davidson women's lacrosse team fell 14-9 in the Wildcats first game on their West Coast swing on Tuesday evening.
Davidson (1-3) was led in scoring by the senior duo of Jen Crawford (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Haley Cook (Darien, Conn.) as they combined to score six of the nine goals. They also picked up the Wildcats' two assists on the evening for a total of four points each.
The Golden Bears (1-3) scored their first win of the season thanks to Alex Tickner and Vail Horn, who netted four goals apiece.
After a scoreless first 13 minutes, the Bears took a 5-0 lead after five different players scored, with Horn netting the last one with a little less than 12 minutes to go in the half.
Cook, fresh off being named the National Lacrosse Conference's Player of the Week earlier in the day, scored the 'Cats first goal when she converted an eight-meter shot to make the score 5-1. The senior then set up Emily Rahill (Ridgewood, N.J.) for Davidson's second goal of the half.
Leading 6-2, Cal would score three straight to finish out the half, getting another goal from Horn and Tickner puttin her second shot in the back of the net for a 9-2 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats had the edge in the second half, when they outscored the Bears, 7-5. Crawford scored the first of back-to-back goals at the 23:30 mark and Davidson trailed by just four, 10-6.
Cook responded with two more Wildcat goals as they would go on a 4-0 run to cut a seven-goal deficit at halftime down to two, 10-8, with 17:06 remaining.
Horn though, got the Bears back on track when she converted on back-to-back goals, one on a free position shot, and Cal pushed the lead out to 12-8.
Jenna Mugele (Baltimore, Md.) scored Davidson's last goal with five minutes left, and the Bears tacked on one more four minutes later to make the final score 14-9.
Michelle Pav (Golden, Colo.) was credited with eight saves in goal for Davidson.
The stats were fairly even across the board, with Cal holding just a three-shot lead, 25-22, but Davidson had two more groundballs to the Bears' 19. Davidson though was only able to convert on two of its nine free-position shots, while the Bears were 3-of-4.
The Wildcats wrap up their trip to California with a Mar. 4 contest at Stanford. Game time is set 4 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Davidson and Stanford played each other last year, with the Cardinal taking a 19-4 decision.
