DAVIDSON, N.C. – Vitaly Radsky earned a thrilling sudden victory decision and Tyler Mullen (165 pounds) improved to 3-0 in Southern Conference action, but it was not enough as The Citadel prevailed over Davidson, 31-12 Thursday night in Belk Arena.
The Citadel (7-5, 2-3 SoCon) won seven of the 10 bouts, but none were decided by falls. Mullen's win via injury default pulled the 'Cats (2-13, 0-4 SoCon) within three with four bouts remaining, but Davidson spotted the Bulldogs six points with a forfeit at 174 pounds, and then The Citadel claimed the remaining bouts with two decisions and a major decision.
Juniors Alex (133) and Vitaly (141) Radsky earned Davidson's other two victories. The Citadel opened the match with a major decision at 125 pounds, but Alex Radsky put the 'Cats on the scoreboard with an 8-3 decision over Jordan Dix. Radsky took control in the first period, scoring two takedowns, but he picked up a point in the second for an escape, and iced the match with a late takedown and the riding time bonus point.
Vitaly Radsky's bout with Nick LaFevre was the closest of the night as it was decided in a one-minute sudden victory period. After a scoreless opening three-minute frame, LaFevre scored first with an escape, but Radsky took him down for a 2-1 lead. Radsky chose bottom for the final frame, but was unable to escape, allowing LaFevre to accrue 1:26 of riding time to even the match at two to send it to overtime. Starting at neutral, both wrestlers tumbled several times in a spirited bout before Radsky was able to secure the takedown and claim the match.
“It's great to see both Alex and Vitaly believing in what we are doing and becoming students of the sport,” said head coach Bob Patnesky. “They've always been good wrestlers, but now they are really executing and imposing their style on their opponents. They're getting on a roll, but now we're just focusing on the next match – nothing else.”
The Citadel was able to reclaim the lead though as Derek Royster earned a technical fall at 149 pounds and Turtogtokh Luvsandorj won via injury default at 157 pounds in 4:56.
Down 15-6, Mullen pulled the 'Cats within three with his seventh consecutive win after Pierre Frazile was injured two seconds into the final frame. The first frame was scoreless, but Mullen built a 3-1 lead with an escape and a takedown before Frazile was forced to retire.
“Tyler has really turned the corner and is coming back strong after a long layoff,” said Patnesky. “He has a really tough opponent coming up at App State, but his confidence is really high. He believes that he can win every time he steps on the mat.”
After the forfeit win at 174, Kelby Smith earned a 7-3 decision and Justin Sparrow earned a 13-0 major decision to put the contest out of reach. Defending 197-pound Southern Conference champion Odie Delaney then improved to 5-1 at heavyweight with a 2-0 decision over Charlie Wolff. Delaney escaped from Wolff's grasp in the second period and secured the riding time point in the final period.
Davidson will face another Southern Conference challenge on Tuesday when they face Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. at 6:00 p.m.
