Wildcat Men Win CCSA Championship, Women Finish Runner-Up

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Davidson Wildcat men's swimming and diving team captured the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championship while the women finished second to Florida Gulf Coast as competition concluded Saturday at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
The Wildcat men defeated Gardner-Webb, 907-653, to earn the first CCSA championship title in school history. Winning the title for a second straight season, the Eagle women defeated the Wildcats 831.5-637.
Freshman Drew Onken was honored as Men's Most Outstanding Freshman Performer, the second straight season a Wildcat has been so honored, capturing titles in the 400 IM (3:51.93, CCSA record) and setting Davidson standards in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke.
Sophomore Ben Lane was named Men's Most Outstanding Diver for the second consecutive season sweeping the diving events for a second straight season, recording Conference records off both boards.
Junior Lindsey Martin was named Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer honors as she swept the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events and posted CCSA records in both the 50 (22.57) and 100 freestyles (49.65).
Head coach John Young was named Men's Coach of the Year after leading the men to their first championship, and diving coach Aaron Hintz was named co-Diving Coach of the Year for a second straight season. Young was previously named Women's Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcat women to the inaugural championship in the 2007-08 season.
Gardner-Webb jumped the College of Charleston men (752) in the standings on the final day of competition. VMI finished fourth with 279 points, while Howard racked up 249 points to finish fifth, and Florida A&M rounded out the list with 110 points.
On the women's side, North Florida finished in fourth with 480 points, Georgia Southern fifth (429.5) and Campbell sixth (219.5). College of Charleston posted 196 points to finish seventh, while Howard was eighth with 105 points. Radford (104), North Carolina A&T (61), VMI (52) and Florida A&M (42) rounded out the final standings.
On the final day of competition, Martin and sophomore Geoffrey Peitz won individual titles. Peitz completed his sweep of the backstroke events with a winning time of 1:48.81 in the 200 backstroke, and Martin won her third individual title with her third NCAA B-cut time in the 100 freestyle. Her winning time of 49.65 was also her third school record and second CCSA record of the meet.
Junior Jessica Delgehausen finished third in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:04.74. Senior Caitlin Sheetz finished fourth with a time of 17:08.89, and freshman Allison Cottle was eighth with a time of 17:34.70. Sophomore Meagan Madden (14th, 18:04.34) and junior Casey Gemunder (16th, 18:51.26) also competed. On the men's side, sophomore Brian Seo turned in the team's best finish of sixth with a time of 16:52.46 in the event. Freshmen Chris Leonard (8th, 17:48.71) and Marcus Carson (12th, 18:53.86) also competed.
Junior Tennant Brastow was fourth in the 200 back with a time of 1:55.24, and Carson finished 13th in the consolation final with a time of 2:05.35.
On the women's side, junior Anna Stringfield finished seventh with a time of 2:04.94 in the event, just ahead of freshman Kelsi Hobbs (2:05.25). Madden finished 12th in the consolation final with a time of 2:10.33.
Junior Emily Castle finished fourth in the championship heat of the 100 free with a time of 51.69, and freshman Jean DeOrnellas was right behind with a time of 52.04. The Wildcats didn't win the 100 free on the men's side, but Davidson filled the second through sixth spots in the championship heat. Junior Bryan Droll finished in the runner-up spot with a time of 46.20, followed by sophomore Curtis Chaney (46.53), freshman Wills Cooper (47.12), junior Patrick Whitman (47.27) and senior Brad Carman (47.33). Freshman Ben Wilde finished 15th (49.22) in the consolation final.
Freshman Drew Onken finished second in the 200 breast with a school-record time of 2:01.51, and junior Ben Lucas finished sixth with a time of 2:12.48. Senior Caroline Curtiss finished 11th in the consolation final on the women's side with a time of 2:24.21.
Freshman Allison Cottle finished seventh in the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.28, while sophomore Lauren Kamperman finished 10th in the consolation final wtih a time of 2:07.62. Hobbs finished 14th (2:10.97) and junior Casey Gemunder was 15th (2:12.79). Senior Miller Williams finished third with a time of 1:54.51, and sophomore Joe Burquist (1:55.71) finished sixth.
Senior Kelsey Chisholm placed fifth on the 3-meter board with a score of 226.95, and classmate Linnea Buttermore was eighth with a time of 194.27.
