Onken Breaks Records, Drops Time at Bulldog Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. -- After being named Most Outstanding Freshman at the 2010 CCSA Championships, Drew Onken set two school records as he competed at the University of Georgia's Bulldog Invitational this weekend.
“After an outstanding conference meet, it made sense to try strengthening Drew's NCAA qualification time," head coach John Young said. "After another week of rest, he was exceptional again.”
Onken finished with a time of 3:49.79, ranking 34th in the NCAA in the 400 IM, after swimming a time of 3:50.77. Both times are better than his former Davidson standard time of 3:51.93.
He also re-broke his 200 breaststroke record twice, dropping from 2:01.51 to 2:00.70 in prelims, and to 2:00.25 in finals. And, trying his hand in a couple more events, he moved up to third all time at Davidson in the 200 backstroke (1:49.39) - and broke the college's all-time record in the 200 butterfly (1:49.69). Sophomore Geofff Peitz's time of 1:51.84 was the previous standard in the 200 butterfly from the 2009 season.
“I'm proud of Drew for extending his season," Young said. "We learned a bit more about how to best prepare him for championship competition, and he established even more momentum for the summer season. Now we wait to find out whether he'll be invited to the NCAA Championship. Either way, he's had a remarkable first season for the Wildcats!
