DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) has had an outstanding start to his collegiate career, rattling off a perfect 5-0 singles mark, which resulted in the first-year player picking up the season's first Southern Conference Player of the Week honor for men's tennis for all matches through February 14.
Schafer guided Davidson to a 4-2 record through their first six matches by going 5-0 in singles play and adding a pair of wins with doubles partner Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.). The freshman was 2-0 at both the No.1 and 2 slots in singles and added one more win at the No. 3 position.
Schafer started his collegiate career with a bang, earning a 6-4, 6-3 win over Clemson's Gera Boryachinskly at No. 3 singles on Janaury 16. Clemson came in ranked 66th as a team.
After knocking off Richmond's William Minter (6-4, 6-1) at No. 2 singles, Schafer moved up in the Wildcats' lineup and has won each of his last three matches, including a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Furman's Sawyer Duncan. Schafer nearly led Davidson to a win over #59 Furman on Sunday as the 'Cats came up just one point short in a 4-3 match.
In doubles action, the freshman has teamed with Noble at the No. 1 spot five times. Overall, they have posted a 2-3 record thus far this season.
The Wildcats (4-2, 0-1 SoCon) return to the court Saturday, Feb. 20, when they host East Carolina at 1 p.m.
