DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson found themselves down to both Anderson University and Belmont Abbey entering the final bouts of the respective matches, but junior heavyweight Charlie Wolff came through in both to give the Wildcats a 23-22 victory over Anderson and a 23-20 win over Belmont Abbey in non-conference wrestling action Friday night in Belk Arena.
Junior Vitaly Radsky scored two pins at 141 pounds to lead the 'Cats (4-14) with 12 points scored. Alex Radsky (133) and Carl Sandercock (149) also won by falls.
When Wolff stepped into the mat against Anderson (5-13), the 'Cats were down 22-20, and then against Abbey (1-14), they were down 20-19.
Wolff defeated Anderson's Chase Duke, 6-4, in the second 30-second tiebreaker following the second sudden-victory overtime period to tip the match in the Wildcats' favor. Taking bottom to start the second period, Wolff scored a reversal and Duke scored an escape, so Duke chose bottom for the third period and evened the match with an escape. After a scoreless one-minute sudden victory period, the pair traded escapes in the tiebreaker frames and went through another scoreless sudden victory period. Duke took bottom for the first and escaped to take a 4-3 lead, but Wolff scored an escape and a takedown in the ensuing tiebreaker frame for the win.
Wolff scored an 8-0 major decision over Abbey's Kyle Spar. After a scoreless first, Wolff tallied an escape and takedown, then added another two points with a takedown in the third frame. Spar's second and third stall warnings gave Wolff two additional points, and the riding time bonus secured the major decision.
Davidson held a 17-0 lead over Anderson after senior Ben Altman opened the match with an 18-2 technical fall over Dequan Warner, and then the Radsky twins both earned pins. Alex pinned Cory Monteforte in 4:10, while Vitaly pinned Christopher Francis in 4:56. Anderson earned a decision at 149 and a major decision at 157 to pick up seven points before sophomore Tyler Mullen extended the Davidson lead with a 7-6 decision over Trevor Sanford.
Anderson erased the 20-7 advantage though with a decision at 174 pounds, a John Hamrick pin at 184 pounds, and a Luis Audelo pin at 197 pounds. Wolff came through for Davidson though in the deciding bout.
The Belmont Abbey match was closer throughout. Freshman Matt Zarth lost in the first sudden victory period at 125 pounds to give Belmont Abbey an early 3-0 lead, but an Alex Radsky (133) 8-4 decision, a pin by Vitaly Radsky in 2:32, and a pin by senior Carl Sandercock (149) in 3:21 gave the 'Cats a 15-3 advantage.
Corey White cut into the margin with a pin for Abbey at 157 pounds, and then Jake Varilek earned a decision at 165 pounds to cut the lead to just three points. However, sophomore Jorge Estrada earned his first career dual win in convincing fashion, an 11-4 major decision at 174 pounds, to give the Wildcats a 19-12 edge.
Abbey took the lead though with a technical fall at 184 pounds and a decision at 197 pounds. The 197-pound contest was one of the most spirited of the night as senior Mark Jeevratnam nearly scored his first career win, dropping a very close 7-5 decision. Wolff's major decision then gave the 'Cats the 23-20 win.
The Davidson wrestling team will next face Campbell and NC State in Buies Creek, N.C., and then will conclude the regular season Thursday at 7 p.m. against Duquesne in Belk Arena.
