Martin Wins Pair of Titles on Second Day of Kenyon Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio – Senior Lindsey Martin won a pair of individual titles and sophomore Kelsi Hobbs set a new school record as the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving team completed its second day of competition at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational Friday night at the Kenyon Aquatics Center.
Martin won the 50 free with a season-best time of 22.98, while classmate Emily Castle finished second with a time of 23.83, also a season-best time. Martin also won the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:49.89.
Martin was one of five Davidson swimmers to earn a swim in the championship final at the second day of competition. Sophomore Drew Onken made it back to two championship finals, finishing third with season-best times in both the 100 breast (57.52) and the 400 IM (3:59.11) in the evening session.
Junior Geoff Peitz placed seventh in the 100 back in the championship final with a season-best time of :51.90, and Hobbs was sixth in the 200 fly with a Davidson-best time of 2:06.73. Senior Anna Stringfield won the consolation final of the 400 IM with a season-best time of 4:28.28.
There were also a pair of relays contested on the second day. The Wildcat women finished third in the 200 freestyle relay, as Castle, sophomore Jean DeOrnellas, freshman Liz Mace and Martin finished with a season-best time of 1:35.13. The Davidson men finished in the same spot, as Peitz, sophomore Wills Cooper, junior David Kerman and senior Bryan Droll finished in a season-best 1:23.44.
In the 400 medley relay, the Wildcat women finished fifth, as Hobbs, freshman Caroline Vrana, Castle and Martin turned in a season-best time of 3:54.29. On the men's side, Peitz, Onken, freshman Thomas Bigham and Droll finished sixth with a season-best time of 3:27.23.
In the morning's prelims, Onken and Martin each earned a pair of swims in the championship finals, while Castle, Hobbs and Peitz made it back as well.
Martin finished ninth in the 200 free (1:54.36) and won the prelim in the 50 free (23.42), and Onken was eighth in the 100 breast (:58.78) and third in the 400 IM (3:59.11).
Hobbs was ninth in the 200 fly (2:09.32), and Peitz finished seventh in the 100 back (:51.90). Castle earned the Wildcats' final spot in a championship final, finishing behind Martin in the 50 free (:23.88).
Davidson also earned eight swims in the consolation finals at the evening session: Castle, Mace and Onken in the 200 fly, Cooper in the 200 free, Vrana and Bigham in the 100 breast, Martin and senior Tennant Brastow in the 100 back. Vrana's time of 1:07.83 places her eighth on the Wildcat Top-10 performers list.
The Wildcat women are in fourth place after a second day of competition with 324.5 points. University of Pennsylvania remains in first place with 779.5 points, ahead of Kenyon (720) and Colgate (385). Wayne State (311.5), Carnegie Mellon (274.5) and Grove City College (159) round out the field.
The Davidson men are in fifth place with 253.5 points, behind Pennsylvania (924), Kenyon (775.5), Wayne State (397) and Carnegie Mellon (281). Grove City College (167) and Colgate (156) complete the field.
Davidson returns to action tomorrow with prelims at 9:30 a.m. Finals will be contested at 6:30 p.m.
