KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Division I men's soccer coaches elected Davidson senior midfielder Alex Caskey to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-South Region second team for the second-consecutive season, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Wednesday.
“It's a really special honor for Alex to repeat All-South Region for two years running,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “The South Region is overflowing with so many great players and awesome teams, from the ACC and otherwise.”
Caskey, a two-year team captain who played in and started all 76 Davidson matches the past four years, led the Wildcats in scoring this season with a career-best 18 points on seven goals and four assists, and was named to the Southern Conference All-Conference first team for the third-consecutive season by the league's coaches. Four of his seven goals were game-winners, including the decisive goal in the 'Cats win over eventual NCAA Tournament at-large selection College of Charleston in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament. During the regular season, he scored the Wildcats' lone goal in 1-0 wins over Campbell, Gardner-Webb (OT) and Virginia Tech. Caskey also tallied an assist in Davidson's draw with No. 13 UC Santa Barbara and a goal against No. 10 Duke.
“The fact that Alex started in every match in his Davidson career shows how much confidence I have in his ability and impact, and underlines how durable and consistent he has been as a Wildcat,” said Spear. “We believe that Alex has the skill and drive to be a pro, so we are hopeful and excited to see that he gets opportunities to play at the next level. But Alex has been a wonderful student and will have a quality, renowned degree from Davidson when he moves past his playing days.”
The Dunwoody, Ga. native earned the same honor following the 2009 season after anchoring the midfield and tallying seven goals and two assists.
Caskey was one of six SoCon representatives across the three All-South Region teams.
