DAVIDSON, N.C. – No. 2 seed Furman defeated No. 7 seed Wofford in double-overtime, 1-0, Sunday night to advance to the 2010 Southern Conference Men's Soccer semifinals, where they will face Davidson Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Patriots Point Athletics Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
No. 1 UNCG defeated No. 8 Georgia Southern, 2-1 in overtime and No. 4 Appalachian State defeated No. 5 Elon, 1-0 to advance to the other semifinal match, which will take place prior to Davidson's match at 5 p.m.
No. 6 Davidson's win was the lone first-round upset as College of Charleston, whom the 'Cats defeated 3-1, was the only top-four seed eliminated. The Cougars had not allowed three goals in a game all season, and had allowed just 12 in 16 regular season games.
Brian McGue, Alex Caskey and Mark Millard all scored for the 'Cats in the win. Caskey's goal proved to be the game-winner, and he also earned an assist on Millard's insurance tally.
Davidson played at Furman during the regular season, holding the Paladins to just one shot on goal, but Alex Kann made four saves though to blank the Wildcats, and the match ended in a scoreless draw.
