DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team will head south to face College of Charleston for the second time this season, as the sixth-seeded Wildcats will take on the third-seeded Cougars in the first round of the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. in Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.
Fans unable to attend can follow the match on live stats and live video at SoCon Championship Central.
Scouting the Wildcats: Davidson (6-6-6) finished their SoCon schedule with a 1-1 draw with Georgia Southern to finish at 1-3-3. Their win came at Wofford, while their two other draws came against top-seed UNCG and second-seed Furman. The 'Cats took a 1-0 loss at CofC, yielding a goal in the sixth minute that proved to be the difference.
“Both teams have evolved since our tight regular season match,” said head coach Matt Spear. “But we know from that game and in knowing Charleston's strengths that we will need to have a strong start to the match, be very sharp on set pieces, and aggressively take our attack to Charleston.
“It will be an awesome match, and we embrace the opportunity to rise to the occasion against such a solid Cougar squad.”
Junior Mark Millard and senior Alex Caskey are tied for the team lead in scoring with 14 points. Millard scored his team-best sixth goal of the season against Presbyterian College and has two assists on the year, while Caskey earned his team-leading fourth assist. He has five goals on the year.
Scouting the Cougars: College of Charleston (10-3-3, 4-1-2) also claimed a share of the regular season championship, the first in school history, and will carry the No. 3 seed into the tournament. CofC is led by Sean de Silva, who has seven goals and seven assists for 21 points to rank second in the conference in scoring. They also boast the SoCon active career leader in points, Kareem Yearwood. The Cougars spent a week ranked in the Top 25 nationally and have suffered just one loss this year in SoCon play, falling to Furman, 1-0.
The Series: CofC holds the upper hand all-time as Davidson is 10-13-0 against the Cougars. The 'Cats last won in 2009, winning on a Caskey penalty kick in overtime, 3-2.
Up Next: The 'Cats will hope to make another trip to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. next weekend, as CofC is hosting the 2010 SoCon Men's Soccer Championship. A win over CofC will allow them to advance to the semifinals Friday.
