
'Cats Wrap Home Season with Coll. of Charleston, Citadel

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team will wrap up its home slate, hosting the College of Charleston and The Citadel in a final pair of SoCon matches this weekend at Belk Arena.
Davidson hosts the South-division leading College of Charleston Cougars (23-5, 11-1) Friday at 7 p.m., and returns to action the following evening to host the South-division trailing Citadel Bulldogs (6-21, 1-11) in its home finale Saturday at 7 p.m. The team will recognize seniors Anna Bradbury, Jorden Benedict, Jennifer Chamblee, Hayley Lawson and Sarabeth Peele in Senior Night festivities prior to the match Saturday.
The All-Time Series
Charleston leads the all-time series, 25-9, against Davidson (15-14, 6-6), including a 3-1 win over the Wildcats in Charleston earlier this season. The Wildcats, on the other hand, hold the 23-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Bulldogs, including a 3-0 sweep on Oct. 10 in Charleston.
Scouting the Wildcats
With the Citadel's loss to Charleston this week, Davidson has clinched its spot in the 2010 SoCon Volleyball tournament. And with 14 wins so far, the senior class is assured of its winningest season as they look to add to their places in the record books with at least seven matches remaining.
With 1,585 kills, Peele enters the weekend ranked fifth in all-Davidson history. With 368 kills so far this season, Peele could jump as high as second in the Davidson record books, behind career leader Mimi Plauche (1,739 career kills). Ranked third in Davidson history with 3,610 career assists, Lawson isn't likely to catch career leader and current Davidson assistant Jenna Edelman (4,075), but she could overtake Holt Hathaway (3,826) if she continues to average 31 assists per match.
While Chamblee will likely crack the top 10 in career digs, entering the weekend with 1,078 career digs and just 53 behind Jennie Wagner (1,128) in 10th, Bradbury finishes her career ranked 10th in assists with 803. Benedict is the only Wildcat on a pair of all-time lists, ranking in the top 10 in Davidson history in both career hitting percentage (fourth, .245) and blocks (eighth, 349).
Scouting the Cougars
Charleston has won its last nine matches, the last three for sweeps of Charleston Southern, Appalachian State and The Citadel, and all but one conference match this season. The Cougars only league defeat this season came to Furman in five sets (25-22, 25-12, 17-25, 23-25, 15-10) in Greenville Oct. 2.
The Cougars have four players averaging at least two kills per set, with Whitney Russell leading the way with 305 (3.43 per set) to rank third in the league. Sarah Haval leads the team and ranks third in the SoCon in total blocks with 127 (1.21 per set), followed by Elyse Chubb (106), who ranks fifth in the league. Cole Dawley ranks second in the SoCon with 986 assists (9.96 per set), and Paige Johnson paces the defense with 342 digs (3.45 per set).

The Citadel earned split decisions this week, picking up a 3-0 win over Western Carolina Saturday before being swept by Charleston in mid-week action Tuesday. Tatum Jestila leads the team with 214 kills (2.52 per set), followed by Kaona Mercer with 200 (2.38 per set) and Jessica Maas with 184 (2.07/set). Alexa Dahlstrom (363 assists, 7.49 per set) and Erin Bucheri (346 assists, 4.81/set) split the setting duties, while Jestila and Kathryn Johnston captain the defense, with 287 and 265 digs, respectively.
Next on the Schedule
Davidson will conclude the regular season with a pair of road matches, traveling to Georgia Southern for a 6 p.m. match Tuesday before a 6 p.m. match at Chattanooga, Saturday, Nov. 13. The 2010 SoCon Tournament, featuring the top eight teams from the league, opens on Nov. 19 in Boone, N.C.
