KINGSTON, R.I. – Delroy James and Akeem Richmond each scored 15 points, and Rhode Island held Davidson to 32 percent shooting in the second half to earn a 71-58 men's basketball victory in the Ryan Center Saturday afternoon.

JP Kuhlman led the Wildcats (2-3) with a season-high 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor. The sophomore canned 3-of-5 from behind the arc.

Jordan Downing netted 12 points off the bench, and Jake Cohen scored 11. Clint Mann posted seven points and nine rebounds.

Ben Eaves scored 11 points off the bench for the Rams (5-2), while Marquis Jones and Daniel West each scored eight. James finished with nine boards.

After shooting 48 percent in the first frame, Davidson was held to 10-fof-31 from the floor in the second, including 1-for-10 from 3-point range. On the other end, the 'Cats gave up nine offensive rebounds in the second half that turned into 11 Ram second-chance points.

Davidson erased a four-point halftime deficit with a quick 7-2 spurt to open the stanza and led 42-41 after a Cohen jumper. But the Rams dominated the next eight minutes of game time and went on a 19-5 run to open a 60-46 cushion with 7:11 to play.

The Wildcats trimmed the margin to 60-51 with 4:26 left and had two chances to cut into the lead more, but Kuhlman and Brendan McKillop missed 3-point tries.

The margin stood at nine points after James and Mann traded baskets, and the Rams missed a shot but got their own rebound, forcing Davidson to foul with 1:30 to play. Rhode Island made 7-of-10 from the charity stripe to seal the win.

Davidson fought back from a 12-point Rhode Island lead with a 14-5 run midway through the first half. Kuhlman sparked the stretch with a triple, while Mann scored four and Downing had five points during the run.

Davidson plays its home opener Monday against Monmouth at 7 p.m. at Belk Arena.

Game Notes: It was the Wildcats' first game at Rhode Island... Davidson finished a five-game road swing to start the season… The 'Cats home opener Monday is the latest in a season during coach Bob McKillop's 22-year tenure.
