DAVIDSON, N.C. — Head coach Michele Savage, in her first year, has announced her first signing class for the 2011-12 season for the Davidson women's basketball team as they will welcome Shannon Eriksson, Hannah Early, Melissa Giegerich and Lillian McCabe to the class of 2015.
“I'm very pleased to welcome the Class of 2015 to Davidson, and we have high hopes for what these four young ladies can achieve over the course of their Wildcat careers,” said Savage. “We have added depth to both our backcourt and frontcourt. This group is extremely competitive. I fully expect them to challenge for playing time next season, and I anticipate these four players being a part of something special here at Davidson.”
A 5-foot-7 guard from Fairfax, Va., Eriksson has been a two-time captain during her prep time for coach Victor Chen at Thomas Jefferson Science Tech. Last year as a junior, the guard averaged 16.7 points and hauled in 9.8 rebounds per contest. Eriksson was named to the first-team Liberty District All-Star team and earned second-team all-region a season ago.
A member of the Fairfax Stars AAU program, Eriksson was also selected as one of the top-six players for the Liberty District All-Tournament Team in volleyball.
“Shannon is a fundamentally sound lead guard,” said Savage. “She has a good handle and will work well with our style of play.”
Early comes to Davidson from just down the road, playing for Gary Richmond at Hopewell High in Huntersville, N.C. A 6-foot forward, she has played for the Queen City Dynasty AAU program. She was a team MVP as a junior last year. The forward poured in nearly 14 points a game, while pulling down just over six boards and shooting 86 percent from the free throw line.
She had an outstanding junior prep campaign that saw her earn I-MECK Conference Player of the Year honors and taking home MVP honors at the Bojangles Shootout, a tournament held down in Charlotte. Just this past fall, Early was named the 2010 I-MECK 4A Conference Player of the Year in volleyball after leading Hopewell to a 27-4 record with team bests of 310 kills and 88 blocks.
“Hannah is a versatile player who will play both the small and power forward positions for us next year,” said Savage. “She is an aggressive rebounder and has a real nose for the ball.”
A native of Wolfboro, N.H., Giegerich is a 6-foot-5 center who averaged a double-double in 2009-10. Staring for Tabor Academy, which is coached by Will Becker, in Marion, Mass., Giegerich had averages of 12.3 points and 10.7 rebounds a contest. She was also a force on defense, swatting away just over three shots a game last year.
“Melissa is a lanky post player who has tremendous upside,” said Savage. “I like the way she gets up and down the court, and she has the tools to become a really imposing defensive presence.”
The Wildcats final incoming freshman, McCabe, is a 6-foot guard/forward from Rye, N.Y., where she plays at Rye High. McCabe has had numerous accolades during her three-year prep career, including being a member this past summer of the Gold medal winning Empire State team that represented Hudson Valley. She has been coached by Mary Henwood since her 8th grade season.
Last year as a junior, McCabe made 45 of 113 three-balls for a 40-percent clip to set the school record. She had a 105 total rebounds (5.8 rpg), 36 steals (2 spg) and 26 blocks. She will become the third player in school history to pass 1,000 points entering her senior season.
McCabe has been a two-time member of the Metro Classic All-Star game, which pits the best in New York City against the best in the surrounding suburbs. She also earned All-Tournament Team honors in the Rye Rotary and White Plains Dr. Lynne Kahn Holiday Classic, which her team won for the first time last year.
A member of the WBA Lady Knicks AAU program, the same team Sophia Aleksandravicius played for, McCabe is also a member of the National Music honor society, four-year member of the band and VAASA (Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse).
“Lillian McCabe is an effective perimeter scorer with three-point range,” said Savage. “At 6-feet, Lillian will give us added size in the backcourt and potentially create match-up difficulties for our opponents.”
