Carkhuff Named PFL Offensive Freshman of the Year

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson freshman quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff was named the Pioneer Football League Freshman Offensive Player of the Year, while Lanny Funsten, Kenny Mantuo, Morgan Popham, John Behm, Peter Kidwell, Ben Behrendt and Justin Williams all earned second-team All-PFL accolades.
Zenus Wilson and Daniel Astrop were named All-PFL Honorable Mention. All of the selections were made by the league's coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own player.
Carkhuff, the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Davidson since Beaux Jones in 2004, threw for 2,002 yards, ranking ninth on the Davidson single-season chart. His 197 completions are the fourth-most in a season at Davidson, and his 59.9 completion percentage (329 attempts) also ranks fourth. He threw for 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions.
Carkhuff broke a 37-year-old school record when he completed 41 passes at Drake Oct. 23, and tied the school's single-game completion percentage record by completing 21-of-27 passes at Marist (77.8 percent).
Funsten finished the campaign with 47 receptions for 685 yards and six touchdowns. The sophomore topped the 100-yard mark in three of the last five games, and his 175 yards at Morehead State Oct. 16, are the 11th-highest single-game total in school history.
Mantuo, who earns second-team All-PFL honors for the second straight season, rushed for 576 yards and five touchdowns on 140 carries in an injury-plagued senior season in which he played in just eight games. He finished his career with 1,936 rushing yards, good for fourth on the all-time Davidson list.
Popham started all 11 games and posted 42 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two sacks, a pass breakup and a blocked kick. The junior ranked 11th in the league in tackles by a defensive lineman and tied for 13th in tackles for loss.
A junior outside linebacker, Behm ranked second on the team in tackles with 69 and posted 11.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, an interception, four pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. He ranked 15th in the league in tackles and tied for ninth in tackles for loss.
Kidwell, a junior defensive back who earned All-PFL Honorable Mention in 2009, recorded 68 tackles, six tackles for loss, two interceptions, five pass breakups and a blocked kick. He was fourth in the league in tackles by a defensive back.
Behrendt made 8-of-11 field goals and 11-of-14 extra points. His field goal total is three shy of the school single-season mark, and he finished his career with 20 field goals, which ranks third in school history.
Williams, who came into the season as Davidson's career leader in kick return yardage, leaves as the Pioneer Football League's all-time leader in the category with 2,843 yards. He logged 902 kick return yards in 2010 to go along with 63 punt return yards and 307 rushing markers. Williams posted 1,461 all-purpose yards this season, giving him 5,045 for his career and placing him second on the all-time Davidson list.
Astrop earns All-PFL?Honorable Mention honors for the second straight season after registering 62 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. The senior finished his career with 196 stops, 18 tackles for loss, eight sacks and 11 pass breakups.
Wilson, who missed two games with an injury, started eight of the nine he played in, and anchored the offensive line. The senior started 20 contests in his career.
The Wildcats return 15 starters, including five all-league players, to the 2011 team.
