DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson junior co-captain Greg Macnamara was recognized for his stellar performance on the field and in the classroom Tuesday, as CoSIDA announced his election to the ESPN Academic All-District Second Team for men's soccer in District 2.
Macnamara is a mathematics major carrying a 3.68 grade point average and has previously drawn SoCon Academic All-Conference, Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner's Medal honors.
“Greg is what college sports are – at least should be – all about in that he's a big time scholar athlete,” said head coach Matt Spear. “On the field, he is our best defender and a team voted co-captain. Off the field, he excels with a full, rigorous academic schedule. In a challenging environment, he makes it almost look easy. That's due to his talent, intelligence, resolve, and maturity.”
The Arlington, Va. native has been one of the top defenders in the Southern Conference and the backbone of a Davidson defense that has posted six shutouts this season. Prior to the current season, the league's coaches elected him to the Preseason All-SoCon team. He as also chipped in offensively, scoring the game-tying goal against nationally-ranked UC Santa Barbara and assisting on a goal against nationally-ranked Duke.
Three Academic All-District teams are chosen in each district, with those on the All-District first teams placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
It marks the second consecutive season that a Davidson men's soccer player has been named to the team. Charlie Reiter was named to the all-district first team last season and advanced to the Academic All-America First Team.
Davidson will host Wake Forest tonight at 7 p.m.
