Box Score
BOONE, N.C. – The South's No. 4 seeded Davidson Wildcats gave the North's No. 1 seeded Elon Phoenix all they could handle, but the seeding held as the Phoenix ended the Wildcats' season with a 3-0 (22-25, 27-29, 26-28) win in the quarterfinals of the 2010 SoCon Volleyball Tournament Friday evening at the Holmes Center in Boone.
Elon (21-13) advances to the semifinals to face the winner of the final quarterfinal match between Samford and Appalachian State. The Phoenix placed four hitters in double figures and got a match-high from All-SoCon Second Team selection Sarah Schermerhorn. Megan McMahon finished with a match-high 50 assists, and Traci Stewart had a double-double behind 10 kills and 11 digs. Ali Deatsch paced the defense with 15 digs.
Davidson, who finishes its season 16-18 overall, was led by senior middle blocker Jorden Benedict, who finished with 14 kills and a .370 hitting clip. All-SoCon First Team selection Sarabeth Peele was the other Wildcat in double figures, chipping in 10 kills to go along with eight digs. Senior setter Hayley Lawson finished with 42 assists, and senior libero Jennifer Chamblee led the defense with a match-high 25 digs.
Davidson won the first three points of the match on a pair of kills from Benedict and Peele and jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Elon got the set tied at five on a two straight points from Sarah Schermerhorn, and the teams traded points until, tied at 8-8, Davidson took an 11-8 error on three straight Phoenix errors to force an Elon timeout. The Wildcats held the lead until 17-15 when back-to-back errors tied the score, and a kill from Caroline Lemke and a Wildcat error gave Elon a critical 20-18 advantage. A putaway by junior Erin Lupfer cut the lead to a point, 22-21, and Davidson would fight off two set points before Elon won the opening set, 25-22, on a kill from Allison Johnson.
The Wildcats busted open a 9-9 tie with an 8-3 run to jump out to a 17-11 lead in the second set. Sophomore Molly Crenshaw served six straight points as a part of the Davidson run that also included two kills from Benedict and one each by Peele and junior outside hitter Christine Perzinski. But Elon chipped away, getting the score knotted at 22 on a Wildcat attack error. In the tightly contested set, Perzinski gave Davidson a set-point chance at 24-23, but Schermerhorn answered for the Phoenix to force the extra play. Allison Johnson's kill made it 26-25 in Elon's favor, but Benedict delivered again for Davidson to fight off the set point. Johnson won the next score, but an Elon error tied the set once more, at 27. Johnson put Elon up again, 28-27, and a kill by Stewart finally lifted the Phoenix to the 29-27 win for the 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set was as hotly contested as the previous, featuring eight ties and three lead changes. Despite getting down 3-0 to start, the Wildcats led the final set the majority of the way until Elon put together another late-set run to clinch the match. Davidson took a 5-4 lead on a Phoenix hitting error and led until a hitting error by Peele tied the set at 21. Fighting for their lives, the Wildcats led by as many as three points twice during that stretch, and Elon managed to tie it just once. But once they did, the set was as back-and-forth as the previous and required extra play for a decision. Davidson fought off a match-point, 24-23, as Perzinski put away a pass from Lawson, but Johnson gave Elon another chance. An Elon error tied the set again, but Davidson needed another kill from Benedict to survive another match point and tie the score at 26. Two straight kills from Johnson and Lauren Copenhagen lifted Elon to the 28-26 win and the 3-0 victory.
