BOONE, N.C. -- All-SoCon First-Team selection Sarabeth Peele and the South's No.-4 seeded Davidson Wildcats will open 2010 SoCon Tournament play against the North's No. 1-seeded Elon Phoenix at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Appalachian State's Holmes Convocation Center.
Davidson earned the fourth seed in the South division with a 16-17 overall record and a 7-9 league record. Elon won the North division with a 20-13 overall record and an 11-5 SoCon mark. The Wildcats defeated the Phoenix, 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 25-23) in the team's only meeting of the season, Oct. 16 at Davidson's Belk Arena.
Quarterfinal Friday begins with the North's No. 2 seeded UNCG against the No. 3 seed in the South Furman at 10 a.m. Defending champion and the No. 1 seed in the South, the College of Charleston, takes on the North's No. 4 seeded Samford in the second match. Following Davidson-Elon, the South's No. 2 seeded Georgia Southern battles host and the North's No. 3 seeded Appalachian State in the final quarterfinal.
Overall Series
Elon leads the overall series against Davidson, 9-7, with the teams trading decisions over the last several years in the close series. The Wildcats defeated the Phoenix, 3-1, in Belk this season, while Elon swept the Davidson in 2009 and Davidson downed Elon in a five-setter in 2008.
Last Meeting
The Wildcats placed four hitters in double figures and got double-doubles from Peele and junior Christine Perzinski to defeat North-division leading Elon Phoenix, 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 25-23), Saturday Oct. 16 in Belk Arena.
Peele led Davidson with 23 kills, matching her season high, and added 13 digs, while Perzinski tallied 11 kills and 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Jorden Benedict finished with a career-high 17 kills and hit a match-high .600. Junior opposite Erin Lupfer was the final Wildcat hitter in double figures, chipping in 10 kills. Senior setter Hayley Lawson finished with a career-high 60 assists, and senior libero Jennifer Chamblee was one of three players in double figures in digs, leading the Wildcat defense with 21 digs.
Elon placed three hitters in double figures, as Sarah Schermerhorn, Lauren Copenhagen and Caroline Lemke each finished with 12 kills. Megan McMahon tallied 43 assists, and Ali Deatsch led the Phoenix defense with 13 digs. Copenhagen also finished with 11 digs.
Last Time at the SoCon Tournament
The Wildcats' last appearance in the SoCon Tournament came in 2008 when they were swept by Samford in the quarterfinals. Davidson has lost in the quarterfinals in its last six appearances and last reached the semifinals with a 3-0 sweep of the Mountaineers in 2002.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson is led by All-SoCon First Team selection Peele, who leads the SoCon with 411 kills (3.48/set) and averages a league-best 4.12 kills per set in league play. Peele is the first Wildcat named to the All-SoCon Team since Liz Williamson and current Davidson assistant Jenna Edelman were named to the second team in 2006 and the first to the first team since Latisha Chapman in 2003. Starting all 33 matches this season for Davidson, she has topped the 20-kill mark six times and posted 194 digs (1.64/set), 25 assists, 26 service aces and 43 blocks to go along with five double-doubles.
Davidson also relies heavily on Lawson, who ranks fourth in the league with 1,023 assists (8.67/set), and Benedict, who ranks eighth in the SoCon with a .302 hitting percentage to go along with 268 kills (2.25/set) and a team-leading 85 blocks (0.71/set). Perzinski continues to remain among league-leaders, sitting in fourth with 40 service aces (0.34/set), while Chamblee ranks ninth with 363 digs (3.42/set).
Scouting the Phoenix
Last weekend, the Phoenix swept both Appalachian State (27-25, 25-20, 25-20) and Western Carolina (25-12, 25-16, 25-20). Schermerhorn led the team with 19 kills and 12 total blocks, while Lemke recorded a .429 attack percentage and three aces. Schermerhorn had nine blocks and 11 kills while hitting.429 against the Mountaineers. Against the Catamounts, Lemke hit .625 with 11 kills and just one error. Both players were named to the All-SoCon Second Team.
Elon's Mary Tendler was selected SoCon Coach of the Year by her peers for leading the Phoenix to its first SoCon North Division title.
