DAVIDSON, N.C. — Leading the conference in kills for a second straight season and the Davidson Wildcats to an appearance at the 2010 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships in Boone this weekend, senior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele has been named to the All-SoCon First Team, in balloting conducted by the league's 12 volleyball coaches and announced Wednesday by the conference.
Peele leads the SoCon with 411 kills (3.48/set) and averages a league-best 4.12 kills per set in league play. Starting all 33 matches this season for Davidson, she has topped the 20-kill mark six times and posted 194 digs (1.64/set), 25 assists, 26 service aces and 43 blocks to go along with five double-doubles.
Peele is the first Wildcat named to the All-SoCon Team since Liz Williamson and current Davidson assistant Jenna Edelman were named to the second team in 2006 and the first to the first team since Latisha Chapman in 2003. Williamson was also an All-Son Second Team member in 2005.
In 125 career matches, Peele enters tournament play with 1,628 career kills to rank fifth in Davidson history. She is joined by Elyse Chubb, Cole Dawley and Sarah Havel from the College of Charleston, Parker Small and Kate Van Dyke of Georgia Southern, and Furman's Kelly Kirby on the All-SoCon First Team.
A 2010 preseason All-SoCon selection, Peele was named the October SoCon Player of the Month, becoming the first Davidson volleyball player to earn the honor since its inception in 2006. She was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week for the first week of October, leading the Wildcats to their best start in SoCon play since 1999 and their first-ever win over Samford, and repeated the following week.
Davidson finished the regular season with a 16-17 overall record and a 7-9 SoCon record to earn the fourth seed in the South division. The Wildcats will open the 2010 SoCon Tournament with a 4:30 p.m. match Friday against the North's number-one seeded Elon (20-13, 11-5), who Davidson defeated 3-1 in Belk Arena on Oct. 16.
