
Tribe Survive Davidson Men in One-Point Decision, Defeat Women

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Despite winning the last relay, the Davidson Wildcat men suffered a one-point defeat to William & Mary, 121-120, and the Tribe women defeated Davidson 146-95, in dual meet competition Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg.
The Wildcats swept the final relay, the 400 freestyle, after the men opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay. Individually, junior Curtis Chaney (200 free), senior Emily Castle (50 free), sophomore Wills Cooper (50 free), freshman Kaliya Burton-Akright (1-meter), freshman Brian McRae (1-meter), senior Lindsey Martin (100 free), junior Geoffrey Peitz (200 back) and sophomore Drew Onken (500 free, 200 breast) were event winners for Davidson.
The Wildcat women finished second in the opening 400 medley relay, which the men's team of Peitz, Onken, Joe Burquist and Cooper won with a season-best time of 3:27.45.
Senior Jessica Delgehausen finished second in the 1000 freestyle with a season-best time of 10:30.30, before the Wildcats would get their first win of the day from Chaney in the 200 freestyle (1:44.92).
Without Martin in the heat, Castle showed off her speed, winning the 50 free with a season-best 24.24. Sophomore Jean DeOrnellas finished third and also went a season-best with a time of 24.95. Cooper made it a sweep for the Wildcats in the 50, winning the heat with a season-best time of 21.78, and junior David Kerman also went under 22 seconds with a third-place, season-best time of 21.97.
Peitz was the runner-up in the 200 IM, swimming a season-best 1:55.71, just ahead of teammates Ben Lucas (2:02.65) and Thomas Bigham (2:03.75).
Burton-Akright and McRae swept the 1-meter diving competition, with scores of 166.20 and 147.30, respectively, in the first round. Burton-Akright later picked up her second individual title, winning the second round with a score of 237.22, while McRae finished second with a score of 228.75.
Kerman swam his second season-best time (1:56.08) with a runner-up finish in the 200 fly, before Martin picked up her first win of the day in the 100 free, remaining undefeated in the event with a season-best time of 51.23. Chaney (48.18) was just out touched by the Tribe's Stephen Fay (48.14) on the men's side.
Peitz swam a season-best time of 1:53.08 to win the 200 backstroke, and Delgehausen followed with her second season-best time of 5:09.72 for a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle.
Onken finished out the winning for the Wildcats, swimming a season-best 4:38.94 to win the 500 free and closed out the individual competition with another season-best time of 2:05.36 in the 200 breaststroke, which also set a new William & Mary pool record.
The Wildcats finished the meet by sweeping the 400 freestyle relays, with Anna Stringfield, Castle, Martin and DeOrnellas winning with a season-best time of 3:30.97 for the women, and Bryan Droll, Chaney, Kerman and Cooper doing the same in 3:08.60 for the men.
After two weekends off, Davidson will return to action at the Kenyon College Invitational December 2-4 in Gambier, Ohio.
