Wildcats Begin CCSA Title Hunt, Host Cougars in First Home Meet of 2010 Saturday

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After three straight road meets, the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving team will begin their quest towards the 2011 CCSA Championship, when they host the College of Charleston Cougars at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cannon Natatorium in the team's conference opener.
About the Matchup
In its first CCSA regular-season meet of the season, Davidson is also positioned to pick up its first wins. The Wildcats or Cougars hold the top spot on the men's side in every event but one, with Davidson, the defending CCSA champions, ranked first in 11: the 50 free, 500 free, 1650 free, 100 breast, 200 breast, 100 fly, 200 fly, 100 back, 200 back, 200 IM and 400 IM. The Charleston men, who finished third at the conference championship a season ago, have the top marks in the 100 free, 200 free and both diving events.
On the women's side, the Wildcats, who look to return to the podium and build on their runner-up finish at the 2010 CCSA championships, lead the CCSA in the 50 free, the 100 free and the 100 fly, while the Cougars have just one swimmer ranked in the top three in an individual event, Sarah Boyle in the 100 back. The Charleston women finished seventh at the league championship last season.
About the Wildcats
After the Wildcats' season-opening meet against the Clemson Tigers, sophomore Drew Onken was selected CCSA Men's Swimmer of the Week for the fourth time in his career, and freshman Brian McRae earned his first career honor when he was named CCSA Men's Diver of the Week. Onken brought three individual titles back to Davidson, winning the 200 fly (1:53.63), the 200 breaststroke (2:07.55) and the 200 IM (1:54.72), and he also swam on Davidson's third-place 200 medley relay, finishing with a split of 23.04 in the breaststroke leg. McRae finished second in both the 3-meter and 1-meter events, scoring 195.82 on the 3-meter and 201.60 on the 1-meter.
Senior Lindsey Martin was selected CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week, and freshman Kaliya Burton-Akright earned CCSA Women's Diver of the Week after the Wildcats' performance against East Carolina in week two. Martin won a pair of individual titles against the Pirates, sweeping the freestyle sprints to win the 50 free with a time of 23.79 and 100 free, in which she is unbeaten this season, with a time of 51.98. Martin also anchored the 400-medley relay to a time of 3:59.06 and the runner-up 200-freestyle relay team to a time of 1:38.26. Burton-Akright earns her first career honor after finishing third on the 1-meter with a season-best score of 244.42 and fourth in 3-meter with a score of 240.52.
Martin repeated with a pair of individual wins and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay as the Wildcats competed against the NC State Wolfpack last Saturday. She won the 50 free with a time of 23.80 and won the 100 free for a third straight meet with a season-best time of 51.79. For their best time of the season, #Emily Castle,# who also won the 50 fly with a time of 25.63, and Martin combined with sophomore Jean DeOrnellas and freshman Liz Mace for a winning time of 1:37.12 in the 200 freestyle relay finale. Junior Curtis Chaney was also an individual winner for the Wildcats, finishing first with a season-best time of 1:43 in the 200 freestyle. After placing third in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events against the Wolfpack, Burton-Akright earned her second honor of the season as CCSA Women's Diver of the week.
About the Cougars
When the Cougars race the Wildcats Saturday, it will be their third meet of the season. The Cougars hosted the Savannah College of Art and Design and Georgia Southern this past Saturday. Both the men's and women's Cougar squads defeated SCAD, but the Charleston women lost to Georgia Southern, 99-128. The women's team beat SCAD, 153-74, and the Cougar men defeated SCAD in their only competition Saturday, 116-106. The Cougar women also picked up a 210-87 women over Radford in opening weekend, but lost to the host Virginia Tech Hokies, 106-173. The Hokies also defeated the Cougar men, 110-168.
The Cougars had two individual event winners at the tri-meet against SCAD and Georgia Southern Saturday. Gracie Herlong won the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.76, while her teammate Haley Fitzpatrick won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 123.20. The 400 free relay of Sarah Boyle, Raquel Rudolph, Courtney Walsh and Meredith Smith also finished first with a time of 3:40.93. Second-place finishers included Smith in the 200 free and 100 free, Boyle in the 200 back and Sara Gardocki in the 50 free. Highlights on the men's side included one-two finishes in both the 200 free, with Matt Sherrier (1:44.63) in first and Eric Craig (1:46.73) taking second. David Sherrier (47.36) and teammate Greg Karel (49.03) also finished in first and second in the 100 free. Peter Gibbons won the 3-meter with a score of 225.20, and the Cougars finished up the meet with a win in the 400 free relay of Craig, Karel, Patrick Jones and Sherrier.

After a weekend off, the Wildcats will travel to Williamsburg Va. for a meet against William and Mary on Saturday, November 13 at 1 p.m. Charleston returns to action in a pod meet against Old Dominion, William and Mary, James Madison and Northeastern in Harrisonburg, Va. on Nov 6 and 7.
