Wildcats Begin Second Half of Season, Host VMI Tonight

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Gearing up for next month's CCSA Championships, the Davidson Wildcat men's and women's swimming team return to the Cannon Natatorium to host CCSA-foe VMI at 5 p.m. this evening.
Last Time Out for the Wildcats
The Wildcats return to action after winter break, with the Davidson women coming off a third-place finish at the Nike Invitational at Kenyon College, where the men's team finished fourth.
Behind her third individual title and an NCAA B-cut time in the 100 freestyle, junior Lindsey Martin was named the Swimmer of the Meet to pace the Wildcat women. Martin won the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.17, after winning the 50 free and the 200 freestyles. She also anchored the Wildcats' runner-up 400 freestyle relay, along with teammates Jean DeOrnellas, Anna Stringfield and Jessica Delgehausen, after anchoring Davidson to a win in the 200 freestyle relay the day before. She was named CCSA Swimmer of the Week for her performance, her second of the season.
Junior Emily Castle was also an individual winner for the Wildcats, winning the 100 fly with a time of 56.41 after swimming the top time in the morning prelims (56.74).
In total, the Wildcats earned 11 swims in the evening session, with the Davidson men led by freshman Drew Onken, who earned three championship swims. He advanced in the 200 backstroke (1:53.58), the 200 breaststroke (2:08.75) and the 200 IM (1:54.62) and also swam onto the Davidson Top-10 performer list in the 500 freestyle with his prelim time of 4:40.28.
Onken also finished seventh in the 200 backstroke (152.52), second in the 200 breaststroke (204.82), and fourth in the 200 IM (153:78), bettering all of his personal bests. Along with Martin, Onken was named CCSA Men's Swimmer of the Week for his performance, his third weekly honor.
Senior Miller Williams also nabbed a spot in a final, advancing in the 100 fly with a time of 50.91.
The Wildcat women finished in third place with 684.5 points, behind the University of Pennsylvania (1,457) and host Kenyon College (1,330.5). Carnegie Mellon (367) and Johns Hopkins (121) rounded out the women's field. Davidson's men finished in fourth place with 380.5 points, behind Kenyon (1,531), Penn (1,446.5) and Cargnie Mellon (483). Johns Hopkins finished in fifth with 163 points.

The VMI Keydet men (3-3, 0-1) are coming off a win over Hood College, 900-267, at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Randolph-Macon. Sophomore James Goodwillie won three individual events, placing first in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.54), the 200 backstroke (2:02.07) and the 200 IM (2:02.02). Senior Will Rowcliffe won the 50 (22.17) and 100 freestyle (49.61) events, and sophomore Matt Dale won the 100 backstroke (56.41) and the 1650 freestyle (18:28.57).
Five other VMI swimmers won single events: freshmen Andrew Nelson (500 freestyle, 5:12.07), Hank Purvis (100 butterfly, 55.87), John Calvert (200 butterfly, 2:11.00), sophomore Benji Howard (200 freestyle, 1:55.68) and senior Justin Ferrell (200 breaststroke, 2:31.17).
VMI has recorded dual-meet wins over Pfeiffer (157-118), New Jersey Tech (91-9) and Manhattan (69-25). The Keydets suffered losses against Georgetown (49-223) and St. Peter's (47-53), as well as CCSA foe Gardner-Webb (102-286).
The Keydet women (1-6) face their first CCSA opponent of the season, coming off a fifth-place finish at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. Randolph-Macon won the event, followed by Mount St. Mary's and Bridgewater.
Junior Chelsea Nugent broke a pair of school records, placing fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:49.01 while also placing sixth in the 200 individual medley with a 2:27.09. Nugent also placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.92), while freshman Pin-Fen Chen was the top competitor in the backstroke events, coming in sixth in the 100 (1:11.95) and eighth in the 200 (2:38.43).
VMI recorded its first win of the season, a narrow 44-43 victory over New Jersey Tech on Oct. 30. They finished third in a tri-meet with Georgetown and James Madison, and suffered dual-meet losses against Pfeiffer (80-111), Mount St. Mary's (24-68), Manhattan (31-54), St. Peter's (21-77).

The Wildcat men's and women's swimming team will travel to Virginia Tech for a dual-meet in Blacksburg at 5 p.m. Saturday. After this weekend, the Wildcat men have just a meeting with Gardner-Web on Jan. 30 before the 2010 CCSA Championships begin on Feb. 18 in Knoxville. The Davidson women will swim against Georgia Southern, Radford, Campbell and N.C. A&T on Jan. 23, in addition to the dual-meet with Gardner-Webb.
