DAVIDSON, N.C. — After a three-game road trip to start the year, the Davidson women's soccer team will open its home schedule this weekend at Alumni Stadium. The Wildcats are 13-7 all-time in home openers and have gone 4-1 in the past five seasons.
The Matchup
Davidson starts a three-game homestand this weekend beginning with contests against Villanova on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. and then a 4 p.m. game vs. Francis Marion on Sunday.
The All-Time Series
The 'Cats have not faced Villanova in their 21-year history, while they own a 1-0 mark against Francis Marion. The two schools faced off in 2007 at Alumni Stadium with Davidson taking home a 4-0 decision.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson is coming off a weekend that saw it drop games at N.C. State and UNC Wilmington ... the weekend saw the 'Cats score just once, off the foot of Amanda Flink ... Flink leads the team with two goals and four points, while Lauren Conner has a team-best two assists ... Davidson is 4-1 in home openers under head coach Greg Ashton ... last year Davidson recorded a 5-3-2 home mark, giving them a 30-9-5 mark over the past five years ... last time vs. the Patriots, senior Blakely Low registered her first two-goal game to lead Davidson to a 4-0 win ... the win also pushed the 'Cats win streak to seven at the time ... Jessie Baxa and Loring Ward have each played in the Wildcats' first three games.
Scouting the Wildcats
The “other” Wildcats have gotten off to a 2-0-1 start, tallying wins against Virginia Tech and Temple ... in their latest contest vs. Nebraska, Katie Ryan forced overtime with a last-second goal, which held up over two overtimes for a 2-2 tie ... for her efforts, Ryan was the MVP of the Villanova Classic over the weekend ... she has put together three goals and an assist in the first three games of the year to lead the team ... through the first three games, Villanova is averaging nearly 22 shots a game (65 total) ... the Wildcats were picked to finish fifth in the National Division of the Big East after an 11-7-1 year in 2008 (4-6-1 in league play).
Scouting the Patriots
Francis Marion, which plays at Charlotte on Friday, dropped its fourth game of the season to start its 2009 campaign, a 3-0 loss to SoCon?foe Samford, Aug. 30 ... the Patriots other losses have come against Campbell, Navy and Kennesaw St. ... Amanda Hall leads the team with two goals, three away from matching her total from last season ... four different players have a single assist each to lead the Patriots ... they return 16 letterwinners, eight of them starters, from last season's 6-12-1 squad ... head coach Joel Person is in his first season after being an assistant for the men's team ... he is just the third head coach in program history.
Next on the Schedule
Davidson stays at the friendly confines of Alumni Stadium for its next contest. It take on cross-county rival Charlotte, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.
