Wildcats Receiving Votes In NSCAA National Poll
9/29/2009 2:20:41 PM | Men's Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Davidson men's soccer team, off to a 6-1-0 start and most recently defeating then-No. 25 South Carolina, is receiving votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America National poll released on Tuesday afternoon.
Earning 27 points total, the 'Cats were effectively ranked 28th in the Top 25 poll.
Davidson has not been ranked nationally since the 2005 season. Soccer America ranked the 'Cats as high as No. 21.
The Wildcats' moved into a fourth-place tie with North Carolina State in the NSCAA South region rankings on Monday. Davidson, a Southern Conference member, is the only team in the Top 5 that is not a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Wake Forest, North Carolina and Duke garnered the top-three places, respectively.
The 'Cats are off to a 6-1-0 start for the first time since 1990 and are on a four-match win streak.
The Wildcats were ranked ninth in the South last week prior to the matches against High Point and No. 25 USC. South Carolina was ranked fifth in the South when they faced Davidson.
“It is a great honor for the program and it is a testimony to all of the hard work the players have put in this season,” said coach and recruiting coordinator Kevin O'Brien. “The competitive spirit in training has been a huge building block for our success – now we must focus on the consistency of our play as we move forward.”
Through seven games, the Wildcats' top scorers are already surpassing or nearing their 2008 and career scoring totals.
Junior midfielder Alex Caskey (Dunwoody, Ga.), who was an All-Southern Conference player in 2008 with 10 points (3 goals, 2 assists) and previously totaled 19 points in 38 games, has already totaled 12 points on five goals and two assists in 2009.
Senior Charlie Reiter (Westport, Conn.), a converted midfielder, has made the transition to forward very well. He leads the team in scoring so far this season with 13 points (4g, 2a) after totaling 18 points in 57 games during his first three years.
Junior forward Yannick Pilgrim (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) is third on the team in scoring with 10 points (4g, 2a). He previously totaled 11 in 28 games during his first two years.
Davidson will look to extend their winning streak as Southern Conference play begins against the College of Charleston on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium. Charleston is ranked eighth in the South region and was previously ranked for two weeks in the College Soccer News Top 30.
For those who can't make it to the field, the match will be broadcast on live video with live audio commentary, along with live stats throughout the contest.
“We have an extremely difficult game on Wednesday night versus a team that spent last week ranked #26 nationally,” said O'Brien. “With only four teams making the conference tournament this season, having a successful start to SoCon play is crucial if you want to be playing come mid-November.”
Fellow SoCon members Wofford and Elon were ranked ninth and 10th, respectively in the same poll.
