DAVIDSON, N.C. – After two tough road contests, the Davidson field hockey team will be looking to return to the win column in a non-conference match against New Hampshire on Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Belk Turf Field.
Fans that are unable to make it out to the field tonight can follow all the action via live stats, which can be found here.
Scouting the Davidson Wildcats: At 2-6, Davidson has struggled with three of their last five games coming against nationally ranked opponents, including two of the top-three teams in the country in No.2 North Carolina and, most recently, No. 3 Wake Forest. A slow start at Appalachian State proved to be costly in the conference opener last Friday, as Davidson fell 3-2. Freshman Annie Evans' late-goal in the contest moved her into a tie for the team scoring lead with junior Ellie Szykowny. Both have four points with two goals. Senior goalkeeper Christa Goeke is just five saves away from tying 1993 graduate Emily Coleman for third-place all-time at Davidson in the category. Goeke's 31 saves this season give her a career total of 281.
Scouting the UNH Wildcats: New Hampshire, an America East member, is off to a strong start at 4-2 and is riding a three-game win-streak. In the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, UNH received six points to effectively rank them 35th in the country. Both of their losses came against ranked opponents in No. 6 Syracuse and No. 19 Providence. UNH defeated NorPac conference member UC Davis on Sept. 12. Their offensive attack is lead by senior Meg Shea who is ranked in a five-way tie for third in the country with an average of 1.50 goals per game. She has a total of nine through six games.
The Series: This will be just the third battle between the Wildcat teams and the first contested at a non-neutral site. Davidson earned a 4-3 overtime-win in the first-ever meeting in 2006, but UNH prevailed 3-0 in 2007.
Up Next: Davidson will face their second conference opponent of the season on Sunday when they travel to Longwood for a 2 p.m. match. The 'Cats will then host conference-rival UC Davis the following Thursday at 6 p.m. on Belk Turf Field and nearby Catawba on Saturday at 12 p.m.
