CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Freshman Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) started his collegiate tennis career off by winning the C Singles consolation bracket, while three other men's tennis players represented Davidson at the Virginia Fall Classic over the weekend of Sept. 11-13.
Joining Schafer in also competing in their first collegiate event was the freshmen duo of Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) and Kevin Moore (Overland, Kan.) as all three are part of the Wildcats' top-25 nationally ranked recruiting class brought in by head coach Drew Barrett.
After dropping his first match to a player from Virginia, Schafer ran the table on the consolation side of the C singles bracket. He picked up wins by the scores of 6-2, 6-4, then 6-4, 6-0 and finally a 7-6, 6-0 win over a player from George Washington to capture the back draw.
Mark, who also competed in the C Singles, opened his collegiate tennis career with a 6-1, 6-2 win over a player from Colorado, then took home a 7-6, 6-1 triumph over a Radford player. He closed out the weekend in third place when he earned a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 victory in his last match.
Competing in the E Singles bracket was Moore. The freshman dropped his first match, but came back on the consolation side to take home a 6-2, 7-6 win over a William & Mary player, before taking home another win over a player from Virginia Commonwealth.
Rounding out the singles players was sophomore Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland), who played in the A2 Singles bracket. He fell in his first match of the day to a player from host Virginia, but regrouped and scored a win over a player from Nebraska who was seeded 75th.
Gee then teamed up with Schafer in doubles action to open up competition with an 8-5 win in the A1 Doubles bracket. The duo then dropped their second match by the count of 8-4.
Mark and Moore formed the Wildcats' second doubles team, competing in the B2 bracket.
Davidson returns to the hard court this weekend, Sept. 18-20, when it competes at the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Ga.
