Wildcats Open Home Season, Host Wildcat Classic This Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team will host Canisius, UNC Wilmington and Radford to open the home season this weekend at the Wildcat Classic in Belk Arena.
The Wildcats will open tournament play with UNC Wilmington Friday at 7 p.m., following Radford and Canisius, who will kick off the Classic at 4:30 p.m. Davidson returns Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. match against Radford and hosts Canisius in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
UNC Wilmington will take on Canisius in the second match at 12:30 p.m. and Radford in the third at 4:30 p.m.
Canisius Golden Griffins: Canisius opened the season at the La Salle Invitational, dropping matches to Fairleigh Dickinson (1-3), Cleveland State (0-3) and Air Force (0-3) before defeating the host La Salle (3-0). The following weekend, the Griffs traveled to the Golden Grizzly Invitational in Rochester, Mich., where they defeated North Texas (3-2) but dropped contests against Wright State (0-3) and Oakland (0-3). They are led at the net by Michelle Godfrey, who has 59 kills this season (2.46/s) while hitting .286. Setter Janelle Davis has 194 assists, and Allyson Severyn leads the defense with 171 digs. Canisius finished the 2008 season with a 17-11 overall record and a 12-6 MAAC record, earning the third seed in the conference tournament.
Davidson Wildcats: Davidson began the 2009 season by traveling to the NC?State Tournament, where it suffered 3-1 losses to Campbell, Charleston Southern, Morgan State and the host Wolfpack. The following weekend, the Wildcats headed to the High Point tournament, and with the return of Hayley Lawson, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, took down High Point, 3-0, and Winston-Salem State, 3-0, with a lone loss to Marshall, 3-1, sandwiched in between. Davidson is led by Sarabeth Peele, who was named to the NC?State All-Tournament Team, with 96 kills (3.69/s). Setter Hayley Lawson has 135 assists in four matches, and Anna Bradbury has 101 in three starts. Molly Crenshaw paces the defense with 101 digs, and the Wildcats have four blockers in double digits, led by 19 from Jorden Benedict. Davidson finished 12-20 overall a season ago, and with a 7-11 Southern Conference record earned the seventh seed in the conference tournament.
Radford Highlanders: Radford started the season at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Tournament, where it picked up wins against Howard (3-1) and Loyola (Md.)?(3-2) and dropped matches against Duquesne (0-3) and Robert Morris (1-3). The Highlanders hosted their own tournament the following weekend, sweeping its competition of Coppin State (3-0), South Carolina State (3-0) and Bradley (3-1). Radford is coming off a Tuesday-night loss to James Madison (2-3). The Highlanders are led by Laura Waddell, with 64 kills (2.56/s), who was named to the Radford All-Tournament Team. Setter Desiree Aramburu, Radford Tournament MVP, has 180 assists (8.18/s), and Katelyn Meeks (133 digs) and Lauren Clary (135 digs) shoulder the defensive burden.
