2009 Davidson Men's Soccer Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Highlighted by three matches against NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago, hosting the Davidson adidas Classic and a full Southern Conference slate, the Davidson men's soccer team faces another challenging schedule recently released by head coach Matt Spear.
“Every Division I team is talented, organized and well-coached so we realize that each match will be compelling,” said Spear. "Hosting the adidas Classic is always fun, to bring in three other teams and offer four exciting matches at Alumni Stadium. The big names on the schedule that will jump out to many fans are Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia Tech and South Carolina. These four programs have rich histories and will be vying for a National Championship run. But of course it's the Southern Conference rivalries that will be our most important matches. Winning the regular season and Tournament Championship are always two of our team goals.”
The 'Cats will kick off the regular season with three-straight home matches, beginning with a match up against USC Upstate on Sept. 5, followed by a pair of contests in the Davidson adidas Classic. The four-team tournament includes UNC Asheville, Coastal Carolina and Georgetown, with the Wildcats taking on UNC Asheville on Friday, Sept. 11 and closing out the tournament against Coastal Carolina Sunday, Sept. 13 at Alumni Stadium.
“Our 2009 schedule starts out really well,” said Spear. “After three important exhibitions to measure ourselves, we kick off with three-straight home games, including the always exciting adidas Classic. The four games over one weekend will be a thrill for local soccer fans. Having Georgetown as our co-host to take on two Big South Conference foes will be a lot of fun.”
After a three-match road swing that includes a trip to Radford, Va. to take on the Radford Highlanders, Davidson will play host to perennial national power South Carolina, who comes to Alumni Stadium on Sept. 25 for the Wildcats' final tune-up before starting Southern Conference play.
On Sept. 30 Davidson will begin their 39th season of SoCon competition with a match against the College of Charleston, followed four days later when they open the month of October in Statesboro, Ga. against Georgia Southern.
“The campaign hits another level of urgency when we begin Southern Conference play vs. the College of Charleston with an immediate road trip to Georgia Southern to follow,” Spear said. “A positive start to SoCon play will be crucial in our efforts to return to the SoCon Tournament Championship, where we were for the 2003, 2004, and 2005 seasons.”
Taking a break from the conference competition, Davidson will play host to Duke on Oct. 6, where they will look to avenge a hard-fought 2-0 loss to the then-ranked No. 21 Blue Devils last season.
Following a visit to Elon on Oct. 10, the Wildcats will have back-to-back SoCon tilts when they take on Appalachian State and Furman. They will then head to Blacksburg, Va. Oct. 20 to go up against ACC-foe and 2007 NCAA National Semifinalist Virginia Tech for just the third time in program history, and the first since the 2006 season.
The 'Cats will close out their regular-season home schedule on Oct. 24 when they will celebrate Senior Day for the team's seven seniors against Wofford. Last year, Davidson used a late goal to bring home a 1-0 road victory over the Terriers.
Three days later comes a trip to Wake Forest, the last of Davidson's three ACC opponents on the year. The Demon Deacons, who came to Alumni Stadium last year as the No.1-ranked squad in the nation and were given all they could handle in a 3-0 victory in front of a stadium-record crowd of 1,921. It will be the 28th all-time meeting between the two schools, and the 19th-straight season they will match up against one another.
“We love to step up and test ourselves against great non-conference competition,” Spear commented. “Hosting Duke and South Carolina, and visits to Wake Forest and Virginia Tech are perfect examples of our ambition as a program.”
Rounding out the SoCon regular-season slate on Halloween night, Oct. 31, Davidson will head to Greensboro, N.C. to face off against 2008 SoCon Tournament Champion and NCAA Tournament participant UNC Greensboro. Last year, the Wildcats kicked off the conference season with a 1-0 home win against the Spartans.
For their 2009 regular season finale, Davidson will head up the road to Buies Creek, N.C. for a match against Atlantic Sun member Campbell on Nov. 3.
In a new change by the SoCon, only the top-four teams based on regular season standings will advance to the conference tournament, which will be hosted by the No. 1 seed. The tournament semifinals will take place on Nov. 13, with the final to be played on Nov. 15 for a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Davidson returns nine starters from last season's squad, in addition to 19 returning letter winners. Joining the club will be six newcomers, including four highly-touted freshman who will look to make an immediate impression on the team.
