DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson senior shortstop Zach Kayne was selected today by the Chicago White Sox in the 22nd round of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The reigning American League Central Champions took Kayne with the 673rd overall pick on the second day of the draft.
The Roswell, Ga. native led the Wildcats with a .340 batting average as a senior, and became the school's all-time single-season doubles record holder with 22. He connected on a team-high 71 hits and scored 41 runs while tying for second on the squad with 37 RBI.
In Davidson's Southern Conference Tournament game against The Citadel, Kayne tied the tournament record with five hits in the contest, including a double which set the new single-season mark.
The 2008 Team MVP, he ended his career for Davidson with 198 hits, 118 runs, and a career .323 batting average. He ranks sixth on the school's all-time career doubles list, accumulating 48 two-base hits in his four seasons.
Kayne becomes the Wildcat's highest draft pick since Brian Akin was drafted in the 14th round in the 2004 draft. Before 2004, the top pick for Davidson was shortstop Rober Eenhoorn, who was taken in the second round (45th overall pick) by the New York Yankees in 1990.
On Sunday, June 14, Kayne officially became a member of the White Sox organization, signing his first contract with the team. He was assigned to the Great Falls Voyagers of the Pioneer League, the White Sox Rookie-League affiliate in Great Falls, Mont.
