Davidson Announces Football Class of 2013

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson football coach Tripp Merritt announced today that 36 student-athletes, making up the class of 2013, have committed to play football for the Wildcats, beginning in the 2009 season. The largest Davidson football freshman class since 1984 will report to preseason camp Aug. 10.
“We fulfilled most of our needs in all three aspects – offense, defense and special teams,” said Merritt. “We also feel that this is one of the more talented classes as a whole that has been assembled in my time as the head coach. Once again, we've done a nice job in North and South Carolina but continue to extend our reach into some other geographic areas of the country, such as New York and Chicago.”
The Wildcats continued to draw from around the country as 15 different states are represented in the class, including nine players from North Carolina, five from Virginia and four from Florida. Nineteen players are on the offensive side of the ball, 14 play defense and three are kickers.
“In conjunction with our Admissions liaison Steve Gentile, the staff has done a remarkable job of identifying and recruiting top-notch students, who excel in the classroom and can compete at the quality level of the Pioneer Football League,” added Merritt. “Recruiting at Davidson is a year-round task, and I'm proud to say our staff, including staff assistant Kristen Foss, has worked extremely hard coordinating their efforts in putting this class together.”
The Wildcats return 13 starters and 41 lettermen from the 2008 team, and Davidson opens the 2009 campaign Sept. 5, at Elon.
