CHARLOTTE, NC – Davidson sprinter Bryan Droll finished second in the “C” Final, and 18th overall, in the 50-meter freestyle with a lifetime best time of 23.67 seconds at the Charlotte UltraSwim Meet held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center Saturday evening.
Droll finished the event 2.3 seconds behind France's Fred Bousquet, the World Record Holder. The time bested Droll's previous career mark, set earlier in the day in the preliminary round, of 23.84 seconds.
The Charlotte UltraSwim Meet is the fifth in of a series of six USA Swimming Grand Prix Events. It attracted some of the nation's top swimming talents, including Olympic Gold Medalists Ryan Lochte, Aaron Peirsol, Katie Hoff, Cullen Jones and Michael Phelps, in his first meet since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
“Getting an evening swim at an international competition is a big deal, and a great credit to his approach,” Davidson head coach John Young said. “It has been a privilege to witness the process by which Bryan's directed energy, and imagination, have begun to reveal his real potential. He's made his teammates and coaches proud.”
Droll and teammate Patrick Whitman competed in both the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events at the meet.
Whitman placed 52nd in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 24.65 seconds. Droll finished in 59th place in the 100-meter freestyle preliminaries with a time of 53.98 seconds, and Whitman placed 84th with a time of 55.42 seconds on Sunday.
