ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The freshmen duo of Anna Smith (Newburyport, Mass.) and Jenna Mugele (Baltimore, Md.) had their fifth and fourth multi-goal games, respectively, of the season, but Navy outscored Davidson by five in the second half on its way to a 13-6 win on Saturday afternoon in women's lacrosse action at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The Wildcats suffered their seventh defeat of the season, falling to 5-7 overall. The Mids made it two games in a row with a win, running their record to 8-3 on the year.
Trailing just 5-4 after Mugele netted her 12th goal of the season with 2:21 left in the first half, Navy's Lexi Dauernheim started a four-goal run with a score at the 41-second mark of the half, and the Mids went on to outscore Davidson 7-2 in the second half for the seven-goal win.
Smith and Mugele led four Wildcats who etched their names in the scorer's book with two goals apiece. Smith halted Navy's four-goal streak with back-to-back strikes in the 18th and 13th minutes of the second period to bring the 'Cats to within three at 9-6, but Davidson got no closer. Her two goals on the afternoon pushed her total to 12, tied for third-best on the team.
Junior Jen Crawford (Mountain?Lakes, N.J.) ran her team-leading goal total to 22 after picking up a goal at the 16:42 mark of the first half that cut the Mids' lead down to one at 3-2. The junior added a season-best two assists, both coming on Mugele's goals, to pace the Wildcats with three points overall.
Rounding out the scoring for Davidson was senior Callie Seymour (Denver, Colo.), who registered her seventh goal of the season.
Navy had five players find the back of the net, paced by Erin Rawlick's five goals and followed by Dani Vivonetto with three. The duo both scored two goals each in the second half, including the last three goals of the game for the Mids with Vivonetto getting two of them.
Between the pipes, Michelle Pav (Golden, Colo.) was credited with eight saves and had four of the Wildcats' 13 total groundballs. For Navy, Elaina Ponchione picked up six saves on Davidson's 18 shots on goal.
Defensively, Davidson forced Navy into 13 turnovers, causing two of them, and had eight draw controls as sophomore Stella Davis (Phoenix, Md.) earning four of those.
It was a return trip home for a few Wildcats as five players are from the state of Maryland.
Davidson seeks to halt its five-game skid with a trip to American on Apr. 12 at 1 p.m. The game will end the Wildcats' four-game road swing as they return home on Apr. 17 for a matchup against Stanford.
