FLORENCE, S.C. - After the conclusion of a weather-delayed second round on Monday, the Davidson men's golf team held onto the eighth-place spot at the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships, taking place at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
The Wildcats fired a team score of eight-over par 296 on the day, giving the team a two-day score of 19-over 595, three shots out of the top-five. Davidson is one of just six teams in the tournament who have put together back-to-back sub-300 rounds.
Senior Michael Saari used three birdies over the first nine holes to card his second-straight 73, and move up four spots into a tie for 14th place at two-over 146. Freshman Jackson Taylor also shot a 73 in the second round, and made the biggest jump on the team, improving his standing by 18 spots from the first day into a tie for 32nd.
On the way to his second consecutive round of 74, sophomore Bobby Urso carded birdies on two of the toughest holes on the course, including the 18th hole, where he was one of just two players to go under par on the day, and was one of four to birdie the 14th.
Rounding out the Davidson contingent was Christopher Rollins (152/T-35th), and David Fowler (153/T-42nd).
Play was halted for just over an hour during the morning due to a lightning delay while the afternoon saw the wind wreaking havoc across the course.
With four individuals in the top 10, Chattanooga's steady play placed it atop the leaderboard at the conclusion of round two. Georgia Southern's Drew Lethem, who opened play on Monday with a six-under par 66, fired an even par 72 in round two to maintain a two stroke advantage over a group of four players at -4. As a team, GSU shot 292 to total 570 (-6) after two rounds, four stokes off of Chattanooga's leading pace.
The championship will conclude with the third and final round on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. Davidson will begin their quest for the title starting at 8:40 a.m., with the last group teeing off at 9:12 a.m.
