DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's golf team will begin their quest for the program's sixth conference title when they head to the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships, held at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. on April 19-21.
“The whole team is looking forward to competing in the championships, and has been putting in a lot of hard work in preparation,” said Davidson head coach Tim Straub. “We know the course well from our previous tournament, and are on the right track heading into the weekend.”
Davidson is led going into the tournament by senior Michael Saari, who is the reigning SoCon Golfer of the Week following his performance at the Palisades Collegiate last weekend.
“Michael has been playing very well lately, and is considered to be one of the favorites to win the individual title,” Straub said.
Saari fired an opening-round 68 on his way to a tie for eighth place out of 87 individuals in the tournament, which was not only a career-low round, but the best single-round score on the team this year.
His three-round total of 211 (-5) equaled the Lilburn, Ga., native's best three-round mark as a Wildcat. Following the 68, Saari carded an even-par 72 in round two and a one-under par 71 in the third and final round. The Lilburn, Ga. native leads the 'Cats with a 73.85 strokes-per-round average, and also has the lone individual win on the team this year with his victory at the Davidson College Invitational.
The 'Cats have experience playing at the Country Club of South Carolina course, having competed there in the season-opening Raines Development Group Invitational back in September.
In the tournament, Saari set his career-low for both a single round with his 69 on the second day, and for 54-hole score on his way to a fourth-place finish at five-under par 211, which he tied at the Palisades. Freshman Jackson Taylor, in his first collegiate competition, had the second-best finish on the squad with a tie for 39th, including carding the lowest round of his career, a 71 on the second 18.
The Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship is in its 73rd year, and has been played every season since 1933, aside from a four-year hiatus during World War II, and the event boasts past champions such as Arnold Palmer (1948-49) and Brad Faxon (1983).
Davidson has the third-most team titles in the history of the championships, behind only current conference foe Furman and former SoCon member East Tennessee State. The Wildcats also have finished as runners-up on six occasions, second-most all-time.
The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional.
The tournament tees off at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning, and fans can follow the action at www.golfstatresults.com, or by following the link at the top of the page.
