CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After starting the Palisades Collegiate with a career-low round of 68, senior Michael Saari finished the competition tied for eighth with a three-round score of five-under 211. Co-hosted by Davidson, Charlotte and Belmont Abbey, the tournament was held at the 6,797-yard, par-72 Palisades Country Club.
As a team, Davidson followed back-to-back scores of 296 with a final-round 301 to keep hold of the 12th place spot, turning in an aggregate 29-over 893 for the three rounds of play. The Wildcats' score was their second-lowest 54-hole mark of the past two seasons, and bettered the score from last year's Palisades by 50 strokes.
Saari, who came into the day tied for ninth out of 87 individuals in the field, carded a one-under 71 over the final 18 to move into the eighth-place spot. His three-round total of 211 was tied for the lowest 54-hole score of his career, matching the five-under he posted at the season-opening Raines Development Group Intercollegiate earlier this year.
Freshman Jackson Taylor wrapped up an impressive tournament with a 10-over par 226 for the three rounds, including a 72 on the second 18 yesterday. His score was good for a tie for 45th place, the second-highest Davidson finisher in the field.
Making the biggest jump for the 'Cats from the first day was Christopher Rollins, who moved up seven sports into a tie for 77th with his final-round 75 and total score of 326. Davidson placed all of its five scored players in the top 80 spots, including Bobby Urso's tie for 61st with his score of 229 and Ryan Crum's 233, which was good for a tie for 72nd.
The Wildcats also had a trio of golfers competing as individuals, with Andrew Goyzueta and Adam Lewicki both firing three-round scores of 237 and tying for 80th. Robert Mayo also took the course as an individual, shooting 273 and coming in 86th.
VCU won the event at 28-under par, 836. Louisville was the runner-up, seven strokes back of the Rams at 21-under par, 843.
Marquette placed third behind the strength of individual champion Mike Van Sickle, who carded a three-round total of 16-under par, 200, setting a new tournament record. VCU was led by individual runner-up Vincent Nadeau (-14, 202).
Davidson will now turn its focus to preparation for the Southern Conference Championships, coming up on April 19-21. The Championships will be held at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
