CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Sam O'Hair and sophomore Alex Radsky each finished in third place at their weight classes to lead the Davidson wrestling team at the 2009 Southern Conference Championships Saturday on the campus of The Citadel.
As a team, the Wildcats finished sixth, with 20.5 overall points. Chattanooga won the team title, followed by UNC?Greensboro, Appalachian State, The Citadel, and VMI.
O'Hair took a 5-0 decision over The Citadel's Kelby Smith in the first round at 184 before falling 11-4 to the No. 1 seed Mikal McKee from UNCG?in the semifinals. He then pinned VMI's Vincent Gallo to move into the third-place match, in which he defeated Smith for the second time on the day, garnering the third place finish with a 4-2 decision.
It was the third consecutive third place finish for O'Hair, who was competing in his final SoCon Championships.
Radsky capped off his breakout sophomore campaign with his best-ever finish at the SoCons. After falling in the opening round, Radsky took down No. 2 seed Casey Boyle from UNCG?to reach the consolation finals. Radsky scored a 2-1 decision in the match over The Citadel's Richard Alarcon, to take home third place at 133.
A pair of Wildcat wrestlers reached the consolation finals in their respective weight classes, both finishing in fourth place. Vitaly Radsky knocked off No. 3 seed Derek Royster at 141 before falling to Appalachian State's Michael Kessler in the third place match. Carl Sandercock upset No. 4 seed Keith Koziel in the semis, but was pinned in the final match.
At 125, Ben Altman dropped both of his matches, along with Kevin Cook at 174 and Charlie Wolff at 285. Three Wildcats competed in their first SoCon Championships, with #Jorge Estrada3 falling twice at 197, and SoCon All-Freshman team members Tyler Mullen at 165 and David DeCamp at 149 both suffering a pair of losses.
